Gallup: 3.4% of U.S. Adults Identify as LGBT

PRINCETON, NJ -- The inaugural results of a new Gallup question -- posed to more than 120,000 U.S. adults thus far -- shows that 3.4% say "yes" when asked if they identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

These results are based on responses to the question, "Do you, personally, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender?" included in 121,290 Gallup Daily tracking interviews conducted between June 1 and Sept. 30, 2012. This is the largest single study of the distribution of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population in the U.S. on record. By comparison, the General Social Survey, a project of NORC at the University of Chicago, asked a sexual orientation question in its 2008 and 2010 survey of about 2,000 adults in each year. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' National Survey of Family Growth asked a sexual orientation question of about 12,000 young adults aged 18 to 44 in 2002 and of more than 20,000 adults in its 2006-2010 survey. The 3.4% figure is similar to a 3.8% estimate made by one of the authors of this study (Gates), averaging a group of smaller U.S. surveys conducted from 2004 to 2008.

Exactly who makes up the LGBT community and how this group should be measured is a subject of some debate.

“I’d love to see the occupation breakdown:”

I’d rather see a geographic break down of the perverts. My theory is that perverts are attracted to cities. Was this poll taken mainly among city dwellers? If so it is skewed.

Figures I’ve seen in the past puts the total homo numbers between 2% & 3%. Survey San Francisco and you will get much higher numbers.

Lol! Had a buddy in the Navy years ago who had a shirt that said don’t hate me because I’m a lesbian. A few of the female (marginally) sailors wanted to wear it, too!

This 3.4% number is funny when you hear the BLT lobby, or whatever they call themselves, try and claim 10% or more.

“I’d swear at least 25% of all house hunters on HGTV are gay.”

Occasionally they show a mixed race homo “couple” thereby getting a “twofer” on the P.C. scale.

I like that show but turn the channel when they bring on the queers.

Simply an artifact of willingness to answer a telephone call.

GLBTs are oversampled simply because they answer the phone ~ and love to answer the phone!

Normal folks DON"T ANSWER unless they have an ulterior motive.

Telling that you have to lump a number of sexual perversions together in order to come up with 3.4%...

Homos
Lesbos
Sexually confused people
Gender confused people

“So, the question of whether homosexuality is genetic or not is entirely moot! It’s homosexual acts that are morally offensive and inherently wrong.”

“Regardless of your genetic predisposition(s) or emotional leanings, you can still choose whether or not to commit homosexual acts. That’s where the trouble lies.”

I agree with you completely. I’ve always thought that. From a moral stand point, abstinence is a valid option. Some Priests and other religious do it. The Apostle Paul did it and recommended it for those who could, he did not order it or ordain it, recognizing the human need and the very real need to populate the earth. I’m convinced that Jesus did it, regardless of any newly found fake parchments, that say that our Savior was married.

We are not all Pauls and for certain none of us are Jesuses but we as Christians should strive to be like our Lord.

“men who use hair remover”

I’m gonna tell my grandpa that, he uses Nair in his ears, says excessive ear hair annoys the hell out of him, looks disgusting and trying to shave it can be disastrous.

Gramps is member “Graybeard58” you have my permission to rag him about it.

i agree with you.
first, it is already a fairly small percent, even including “bi”.
but i suspect the real number is even lower.
since even PEW admits liberals lie.
...i’d wager big money, that some liberals said they were,
simple to skew the poll...

Interesting stats. I probably wouldn’t have looked at the source, so thanks for your extra effort in posting.

I agree! The government should determine who has sex with who.

Well, at least who you may not have sex with. They already do that: Can't legally have sex with minors or with those you have paid for the service.
