Virginia Health Commissioner Karen Remley resigned Thursday in protest of the state's strict new regulations for abortion clinics.
Remley said the politicized fight over the regulations, which require abortion clinics to meet the same, tougher code standards as hospitals, made it impossible for her to continue as the state's top health official. Abortion rights supporters have portrayed the new regulations as an attempt to restrict access to legal abortion services.
"Unfortunately, how specific sections of the Virginia Code pertaining to the development and enforcement of these regulations have been and continue to be interpreted has created an environment in which my ability to fulfill my duties is compromised," she wrote in a letter to colleagues.
The state Board of Health approved the new regulations sought by the General Assembly, but initially decided not to apply those tougher standards to existing clinics. State Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli refused to sign off on the new rules, however, unless they also covered existing facilities. The health board last month met again and reversed it's earlier position as Cuccinelli wanted.
Abortion clinics have been UNREGULATED for too long....
Imagine that, these idjits want to legalize back alley abortions by unqualified people (didn’t Kalpornia just do that?)
The state’s top health official resigns because certain “medical providers” have to be MORE SAFE?
In what world does that make sense?
Her job is not to ensure access to abortion, it’s to ensure that the state’s standards are met.
Her resignation is the most political thing about this.
The infuriating thing is that these same people want abortion alternative counseling centers to have to comply to hospital standards.
Logically, for the pro-aborts, there should be no regulations at all on abortion. Your neighbor should be legally permitted to do it with the proverbial coat hanger, for money, even, so long as he reports the income properly to the IRS. It is solely a woman’s business what she does or has done to her body, no? Could coat hangers then be subject to the new medical devices tax?
It’s amazing how liberals love regulation in almost every area—unless it concerns one of their pet activities like abortion.
Hey Karen Remley, Hillary told you twits to quit whining.
Good riddance, say I.
The basic question I have is this: How can abortion clinics ever be safe for the unwilling half of the people that come thru the door?
Funny how liberal Democrats claim to want abortions that are “safe” and “rare” ... until it actually happens.
Damn straight...
Talk about “women’s rights”, how about the right to a regulated, safe procedures?
We have had in this state alone too many deaths due to unregulated procedures...the death of a baby not withstanding.
Don’t let the government door hit you in the a** on the way out, you abortion-loving, woman hating, political hackstress.
