Apple tries to kill its own Java on most Macs

Pushes users to deal with Oracle, which maintains Java 7 for OS X

Computerworld - Apple yesterday started scrubbing most Macs of older Java browser plug-ins, a move that will force users to download the software from Oracle. The company also patched Java for OS X, the second time Apple synchronized its Java security update with Oracle's, releasing its patches for OS X the same day as the Java software maker.

Along with the Java patches, Apple beefed by OS X security by uninstalling old browser plug-ins for the software.

The update aimed at Lion and Mountain Lion --which collectively accounted for 60% of all Macs last month -- zaps plug-ins provided by Apple via Java 6 and earlier.

"This update uninstalls the Apple-provided Java applet plug-in from all Web browsers," Apple said in a support document.

so THAT is what that software update notification I saw earlier this evening was about. The information provided said it was to improve security and stability of Java... and listed some bug fixes... It was one of the quickest updates I have ever seen on my Macbook Pro...

Apple doesn’t like stuff they don’t control and is more than willing to piss off users who just want stuff to work seamlessly.

I suspect it has to do with licensing from Oracle.

Most versions of Java have severe security flaws that will put your computer at risk. This is designed to remove the vulnerable versions of Java, either by forced upgrade to a safe version or uninstall.

Correct.

And they may be risks in the future.

It’s always a good idea to disable Java - unless and until you specifically need it for some task.

so what are you supposed to use instead of Java if you want things to move on your screen?

why would Java deliberately make software that caused security issues?

this is just software wars and I do not trust evil Apple one bit

there are no perfect solutions, although Flash is arguably safer. its a memory hog though.

Methinks you have no idea what this is all about.

Ever hear of a molehill?

Well, there's this language JavaScript (no relation). And there is SVG. And even CSS3.

why would Java deliberately make software that caused security issues?

Java is obsolete technology. And deliberately isn't necessary. Accidentally is good enough, LOL! But the bottom line is, you don't need Java client side.

this is just software wars and I do not trust evil Apple one bit

So, then I guess you can trust Oracle, instead! LOL!

Frying pan vs fire?

A molehill is something so insignificant that it escapes the attention of all but those looking for an issue.

Apple has not distributed Java with its operating system since Snow Leopard.

Anyone who is using Lion of Mountain Lion and has Java on his system put it there himself.

This whole issue is much ado about nothing.

It's not deliberate. But it is incompetence on the part of Java developers.

Remember the recent news of the first viruses to show up in the Mac world? It was Java that allowed those viruses to install themselves on user's computers.

And, Oracle (owner of Java) is far more evil than Apple.
