President Vladimir Putin took a leading role in the latest tests of Russia's strategic nuclear arsenal, the most comprehensive since the 1991 Soviet collapse, the Kremlin said on Saturday.
The exercises, held mostly on Friday, featured prominently in news reports on state television which seemed aimed to show Russians and the world that Putin is the hands-on chief of a resurgent power.
Tests involving command systems and all three components of the nuclear "triad" - land and sea-launched long-range nuclear missiles and strategic bombers - were conducted "under the personal leadership of Vladimir Putin", the Kremlin said.
An RS-12M Topol Intercontinental Ballistic Missile was launched from the Plesetsk site in northern Russia, and a submarine test-launched another ICBM from the Sea of Okhotsk, the Defence Ministry said.
Long-range Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers fired four guided missiles that hit their targets on a testing range in the northwestern Komi region, it said.
"Exercises of the strategic nuclear forces were conducted on such a scale for the first time in the modern history of Russia," the Kremlin statement said.
"Vladimir Putin gave a high evaluation to the combat units and crews and the work of the Armed Forces General Staff, which fulfilled the tasks before them and affirmed the reliability and effectiveness of Russia's nuclear forces."
The exercises included tests of communications systems and "new algorithms" for command and control, it said.
Russia says it is modernizing a nuclear arsenal that was largely created during the Cold War and will continue to use nuclear weapons as a key deterrent.
In the 2010 New START treaty, Russia and the United States set lower numerical ceilings on the weapons tested in the exercise.

Concise and robust. DrC, you have put into text what so many of us think. Well done. My only "nit to pick" is that I would not be as charitable in stating that BHO has "forgotten or doesn't understand." I think he is deliberatly placing us in harm's way with malice and forethought.
Serious corruption issues, you have to bribe someone to fart. Of course Zero is working on catching up...
Oh, they can comprehend it. They understand it. Look, the Democratic Party has been the Manchurian Party since 1988, only nobody has figured it out yet.
These guys, Slick and Barky, will do the damage .... and then evacuate at the 11th hour to cushy digs in China and the Umma respectively.
They'll fly, and millions will die. I think that's their Plan B at least. Plan A is to fleet up to World Government and become founder-tyrants of the World Despotate.
You mean, so far?

The USSR is the very *last* country on earth where a sane person would want oil to be found. But find it they did.
Remember that these numbers have to be substantially discounted from the reality of the USSR. Since the breakup Mother Russia has just half the population (175M vs 350M ) as it had before. Putin himself has said Russians would be crazy to want the runaways back. And don’t forget they are now surrounded by those same runaways who have a lot of axes to grind with Putin et al. Bottom line is they went broke building weapons when they were twice the country and they still can’t keep a nuclear submarine running reliably. Remember awhile back when they fired up the old Bear bombers and flew a couple sorties towards Alaska? They used all the fuel they had and parked ‘em. Every time they shoot their mouth off with a big show it’s followed by great, quiet, humility. And by the way, Obamuzzie has to go thru the House to do any serious weapons cutting so I think he’s limited to whining, bitching, and otherwise weeing in the White Hut for the next few months after which we are going to steam clean the place.
Barack Obama admits US has ‘more nuclear weapons than we need’
President Barack Obama admitted on Monday that America has “more nuclear weapons than we need” and pledged to seek another far-reaching disarmament agreement with Russia.
Since when does Obama need congress for anything?
And remember - if he is re-elected, “he will have more flexibility”.
In closing, I think its undeniably true that Russia will face significant economic and military challenges because of demographic pressures: finding a way to keep the military functional with smaller numbers of young men and finding ways to pay pensions with smaller numbers of workers will be difficult in even the rosiest interpretation. However these pressures are not necessarily as overwhelming, or as irresolvable, as they are often made out to be. If Russia continues to make progress in reducing mortality and if not increasing fertility then at least preventing it from declining, it will likely be able to maintain its current population. This will not allow the Kremlin to send hordes of tanks careening over the plains of Europe, but it will prevent Russia from suffering a catastrophic decline in power and influence (a prediction which is heard with increasing frequency among serious analyst of foreign policy).
I am laboring under the impression that 1 of the Achilles Heels of our nuclear warheads is maintenance, i.e., re-supply of the tritium components which have a half-life of 12 years. If memory serves me correctly, the only production facility of tritium in the U.S. is the Savannah River Site near Aiken, South Carolina. I've been concerned for 3 years that BHO will sabotage our nukes by going through the "back door" and gutting the SRS budget. Anybody out there have any info on this?
Nobody would want to conquer Russia now. Its not worth conquering, it is a trashed land.................................................. The surface may be trashed but natural resources are still plentiful. Who needs oil and minerals more than the Russians?? Think about it. Who has the largest border in the world and only 140 Million people to defend it?
Well, it was always an issue and they still made every nose sticked there to grab something bleeded.
Maintenance of our hardware all the way around is critical but I haven’t seen any examples of Obamuzzie getting in the way of long-range-planned projects that pre-date his term. He does have a dumbass running the Dept.of Energy so they could figure out a way to slow spending but we would have heard of that. To the point here I notice that the Navy is proceeding on schedule with the new wharf at Bangor that will be used to update sub launched ICBM’s out of the weather and sight. It’s a big money project and would certainly have been a cutting target if a fleet cutback was in the works. And by the way -—one of Romney’s planks is to boost Navy ship production from 9/year to 12/year, some of which will be subs. It all has to keep Putin feeling kind of underpriveleged.
