Call me crazy BUT...as adult women have been delaying or even foregoing childbirth, teen pregnancy rates have risen, onset of puberty age has declined. Correlation? Hmmmm...

A Doctor friend of mine says it is because of all the hormones used in chicken and beef. He said the molecules are not destroyed by cooking and are passed on to the consumer. They dope a chicken to have unnaturally sized breasts and we wonder why girls start growing them at age ten.

Reminds me of an old joke going around when I was a high school freshman. One boy said he was warned by his mother that he'd turn into a stone if he ever looked at a Playboy magazine.

He said he didn't believe her and tried it anyway. Unfortunately, Mom was right. He already started soon after looking!

It would be interesting to know the demographic breakdown, particularly those in the inner city...

Both my daughter (now 28) and I started at the 1920 average.

Interestingly, it was 16.6 average in 1860...

I have a gyn/ob book from 1890 and in there it says that on set of puberty for girls has a range of 10-16, with the average being 11-12.

This study, is interesting though.

I have friends who think it’s all the soy we eat which is full of estrogen, they also think that’s why boys are so girly now.

Chicken aren’t mammals and don’t have mammaries.

I have 7 girls. I believe it has something to do with nutrition.

I have one girl who is underweight and she started pretty early like 8, she is also very tall and they were concerned with her body aging quicker that it was supposed to. She has a twin sister who is much shorter and hasn’t really begun, she is also a more normal weight or on the low end of normal weight.

None of my kids are overweight but I think that puberty may onset quicker if you reside at either end of the weight spectrum.

From the soy baby formula? That’s usually the last time most people get it until their mid-50’s when doctor tells them to eat more soy to prevent heart disease. Kids are throwing out their fruit and veggies; they sure aren’t going for a plate of steamed tofu and brown rice.

Breastfeeding is much more popular compared to earlier generations so I’m not sure it is the culprit.

Your doctor friend might not have gone to Harvard. Fat produces the estrogen hormone. The young girls start menses because they are fat.

On the other hand, we see more girls turning into pure thugs. Nature vs. nurture.

Not only do we eat soy which may have major effects on hormones but we also have replaced almost all animal fat in our diet with ‘edible oils’ which are not natural and may be the true cause of heart disease and many other problems.

The studies on soy are IMHO fairly reliable. Hence why my son won't eat soy until he's fully grown.

Another theory is fluorescent lighting.

Yes, I mean it.

Before the 20th century, people went to sleep when the sun went down, and woke up with the dawn. Incandescent lamps are pretty similar to what the sun comes up with, on a lesser scale of course.

Once fluorescents came out, the body, girls bodies in particular "adapted" to the artificial lighting.

Their bodies thought it was "sunlight" and reacted as though they were older than they actually were.

So they started menstruating earlier. Hence earlier menstruation/ fertility than their sisters 40 years before.

No, I did NOT make this theory up.

I’m surprised to hear a doctor espouse such an opinion. I’d be surprised to learn that hormones are biologically active across species.

Soy is a lot of food as an additive.
I agree breast milk the first year + is best.
