Ole Miss Crowns First Black Homecoming Queen: Courtney Roxanne Pearson
Politics 365 ^ | 10/16/12

Just 50 years after ending its notorious segregation policy, Ole Miss finally has a black homecoming queen. The school just crowned Courtney Roxanne Pearson as their queen, with the student receiving the crowning during the halftime ceremonies of the Ole Miss-Auburn football game.

“I am still in shock, but I am definitely very excited,” said Pearson.

I love it!
And I’m disappointed in all the crappy comments.
Look at the proud look on her fathers face! Can you imagine what a sense of pride he has escorting his daughter, whom he loves, onto the field? This is her moment.
The students knew who the candidates were and voted accordingly.
Let them have their moment too. If this is a shock to them from some kind of lackadaisical vote then you know they will get out the vote next year.
She looks very beautiful to me.

There was no reason for all the nasty comments. They were aimed at the fact that she was black and a large girl. It shows that they worship the shallow, outward things which I find not very attractive. Being dismissive of someone because of color and size is not conservative. Beauty fades but ugly inside is forever.

re: Give her a couple of years

Give us all a couple of years. Not many of us look as good as we grow older than we did at 20.

Your point about the double standards and media race obsession is a good one. I just didn’t like seeing some rude comments here on the thread, and my mom gene led me to speak up for the young lady. In an interview regarding her race, and her size, she said she wasn’t going to let nasty comments affect her; saying, “If you want to be mean, be mean by yourself.”

Kid seems to have a good attitude, and I wish her well.

She is beautiful. It is a different kind of beautiful but it counts just as much.

I have an adopted black daughter. Big girl, beautiful eyes, complexion and skin tone. Her body is lush and full. Her skin is like velvet. Incredible personality and has multitudes of friends. Children adore here. She is taking time off from work next January to volunteer work in an orphanage in a third world country for 6 months, on her own dime. She has been there twice before.

She has numerouss men who are interested in her. She would easily be crowned homecoming queen in any setting.

As we move from 2 dimensional to three dimensional visuals, I think that rounder body styles will be more and more popular.

Yes, I went to a big state school and don't remember ever voting for Homecoming Queen.

Pretty sure I couldn't have cared less.

I believe weight like that exhibits a lack of self control.

The steady stream of predictable, instantaneous deregatroy comments anytime a woman happens to be "less than beautiful" exhibits a lack of self-control, as well.

It does! In my teen years, through self discipline and effort, I lost 30 pounds in a year, got handsome and a new girlfriend.

...all the nasty comments. They were aimed at the fact that she was black and a large girl.

The negative comments were not because she is black. Accusing freepers of racism like that is an insult.

If this girl were white there would be twice as many negative comments. She is not beauty queen material in our culture. In other cultures she might be but in our culture we typically have thinner and taller gals with long hair.

Hire a new head coach, elect a black homecoming queen and — finally, after so many years — beat Auburn.

Seems to me like a winning formula! What’s not to like?

"Bad choice of homecoming dress. When her arms and shoulders are covered, she is very presentable."

It seems like girls/women don't care anymore about playing down their flaws and accentuating their best features. Just let the rolls and the fat all hang out.

I imagine this mindset is partly due to the suddenly-popular view that morbidly obese is merely "curvy."

Most Division III schools would beat Auburn this year.
