“Economic Patriots [team stats]” — arise! You’ve got nothing to lose but your money!
The Obama campaign is printing up millions of copies of his “new” 20-page plan entitled “Economic Patriotism.” It’s been a theme of the president’s campaign since Joe Biden said in 2008 that paying higher taxes is “patriotic.”
Now Barack Obama has adopted it as his closing argument in a close presidential race.
“We should ask the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more, a modest amount,” Obama said recently. “There are a lot of well-to-do Americans, patriotic Americans, who understand this and are willing to do the right thing.”
(Let’s not quibble as to whether raising income tax rates by more than 10 percent — not to mention capital gains taxes jumping from 15 percent to around 23 percent — is “a little.”)
In Obama’s America there are two groups: The “patriotic” folks who support higher taxes. And those who don’t. That’s the unpatriotic group. They don’t love their country as much as people who support tax hikes.
If that sounds uncomfortably divisive for a “uniter” like Obama, you haven’t been paying attention. Right now he’s running ads in Ohio that conclude like this: “Mitt Romney: He’s Not One Of Us.” As the Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty notes, the phrase “echoes a slogan that has been used as a racial code over at least the past half-century.”
Which is weird, because Obama supporters are simultaneously insisting that the real bigots are Americans voting against Barack.
“On the right, it’s their hatred, hatred of Obama,” Chris Matthews said on MSNBC after the second debate.
