A community college student has been arrested for the abduction, murder and dismemberment of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, Colorado police said today.

Austin Reed Sigg, 17, was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder and kidnapping. Sigg is a student at Arapahoe Community College, according to his arrest report.

"Law enforcement received the major break in the Jessica Ridgeway investigation they have been hoping for," the Westminster Police said today. "Late Tuesday evening police received a call that led them to a home near the Ketner Lake Open Space."

There was a recent abduction attempt of a child in our area, by a small man wearing a mask. I discussed it with my child, and pointed out that it could be a local boy in his early teens, because of the height, disguise, no car. She said she wouldn’t be afraid of a teenager - I said she ought to be - they’re stupid, impulsive, and given to panic - they start a crime and kill to hide it. Just a few days ago, two teenaged boys killed a 12 y.o. in South Jersey, and now this.

This suspect in the Colorado killing would have looked like a man to Jessica, but parents, warn your children that predators could be older boys (or girls but much less likely.) Children are inclined to trust children, even look up to the ones a bit older, not fear them, but a fair number of abduction and murders are committed by teenagers.

and scary as he could have learned “special” things to do to remove evidence that he learned in class and whatnot...

Except Dexter only goes after the serial killers who have escaped justice, this creep went after innocents...

I would say if Dexter and him met in a dark alley, only dexter would leave that alley alive...

“Children are inclined to trust children, even look up to the ones a bit older”

I thought about that statement and you are so right. My six year old would trust a teen boy more than even an adult female. Why? Because she has a teen/older brother. Plus, she gets along very well with his friends. Looks like this is going to be discussed during family dinner.

This whole situation is devastating. What the young girl suffered, what her family will suffer for the rest of their lives, and what the family of this young man will suffer through. I just can’t imagine.

It might be good to warn children that even benign-looking people could be predators.

But if the murderer's m.o. in abducting Jessica was the same one he used in his attempted abduction of a woman jogger (see last paragraph of article), then Jessica might never have seen him.

IOW, he might have snuck up from behind and covered her nose and mouth with a "chemical-soaked" rag. Sounds like he might have used chloroform.

It's terribly sad, but I don't think there's much we can do to prevent this sort of crime, short of watching our children constantly ... which, after they reach a certain age, is nearly impossible.

17 is so young. What could have caused him to commit such heinous acts? Since he is studying crime scene information in school, makes you wonder if he has committed any other crimes?

Ted Bundy admitted reading Detective magazine to learn how to cover his crimes, back in the day. I suspect this “boy” has had fantasies of killing for a while now.

From the linked article: "... arrested on suspicion of two counts of first degree murder, ..."

I find this a little confusing. Are there two dead people?

Also, one thing I taught my daughters when they were young was that, if they had to make contact with a stranger, make sure that they did the choosing of who to contact. It's better to knock on any random front door to ask for help than to trust somebody who stops to offer help.
