An elderly man in a widely seen Democratic TV ad who assails Virginia Senate candidate George Allen for backing partial privatization of Social Security, possibly threatening his fixed income, is a prominent Democratic trial lawyer known for defending former Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke in his legal tussles with flamboyant former wife Suzanne Cooke.
In the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee ad blanketing Virginia, Edwin Williams is portrayed as a home-bound retiree on fixed income. "I count on Social Security and and I don't want Washington politicians like George Allen privatizing it," says the still active lawyer.
The ad does not further identify Williams, other than show his Social Security benefit papers and the street number on his McLean mailbox on leafy Swinks Mill Road populated with million-dollar brick colonials. His home is assessed at over $987,000. The text of the ad simply calls Williams, "senior."
The ad has been a blockbuster hit against Allen who is tied or slightly trailing in polls against Democrat Tim Kaine.
Asked about the ad and Williams, DSCC spokesman Matt Canter said, "Virginia seniors count on Social Security and don't want Washington politicians like George Allen to privatize it. George Allen's Wall Street backers may love his plan to privatize Social Security, but it's a disaster for Virginia seniors."
Williams did not return multiple calls to his Vienna, Virginia office or home, though a woman who answered at his home promised a return call.
Williams helped start the boutique law firm, Kellogg, Williams and Lyons in 1972. He has led the firm's Vienna branch for years. Calls to the firm's Washington office were referred to Williams in Vienna. His partner, Philip Kellogg, also did not return a call or email.

“Asked about the ad and Williams, DSCC spokesman Matt Canter said, “Virginia seniors count on Social Security and don’t want Washington politicians like George Allen to privatize it. Way to answer the question, Matt
These idiots weren’t even smart enough to find a real retiree and spoonfeed the words into his naive old mouth?
I don’t care whether it’s a real poor senior or this ambulance chaser, but if a Social Security privatization commercial is hammering George Allen like Macaca did last time around, you have to wonder what he’s missing in his makeup that he cannot figure out an effective response.
Calls for an counter ad to expose this fraud.
They could call attention to the identity of the “senior” in the ad.
George Allen had better answer this ad, PRONTO.
VA Ping!
If you want on/off the VA Ping List, please freepmail me.
If you see posts of interest to Virginians, please ping me.
Thanks!
Sure, they could do a lot of things, but again, shades of macaca, the Allen campaign and the candidate are bug-eyed in front of the headlights.
Dems can hire 'rent a crowds' off Craigslist, but it's harder to get seniors that way... guess one of their fat cats had to fake it...
Today I heard a Kaine ad, using several woman to blast George Allen. Its close each of the women repeating “I’m Virginia and George Allen doesn’t work for me” or words to that effect. Then you hear Kaine’s “I’m Tim Kaine and I approve this message.” Funny part is each of the women sounds more manly than Kaine who sounds very effeminate in the ad.
I’m in North Dakota this week on travel. The script for that ad (I’ve seen it) is being used against Senator Berg here in ND. Elderly guy comes out and says how he earned his SS and Berg wants to take it away - Rats are absolutely shameless ...
