The top two challengers in Marylands U.S. Senate race are hoping to unseat Democrat Benjamin L. Cardin, but they are spending much of their time battling each another.
Republican Dan Bongino and independent Rob Sobhani have taken turns in recent weeks dismissing the other and describing himself as the one true threat to Mr. Cardin, a first-term senator whom political analysts consider a strong favorite to win re-election.
Mr. Bongino entered the race a year ago. He churned up grass-roots support throughout the state and defeated nine other Republicans in the primary.
Mr. Sobhani an entrepreneur and author jumped into the race last month. He has spent more than $4 million on ads that have helped him pull virtually even with the Republican nominee, polls show.
Some analysts predict that the two underdogs will hurt each others numbers by splitting the opposition vote, but both men insist that they have better chances than analysts are giving them.
Im confident that were going to win, said Mr. Bongino, a former Secret Service agent. I didnt leave my job for the silver medal. With Sen. Cardin and myself, there are two paths forward and they dont cross.
Despite optimism from the two challengers, analysts say, Mr. Cardin's Senate seat is one of the nations safest among those up for re-election this year.

Rob Sobhani: bull in a china shop.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
“I” stands for idiot. He is probably paid by the RATS.
As a resident of deep blue MD it sure looks like Bongino and Sobhani will split the vote and Cardin will waltz right back into the comfort of his cushy senate seat. MD citizens aren’t the brightest, MD republicans even less so.
It’s a damn shame Sobhani got into this thing this year. He is probably a Democrat in disguise.
I’d like to know what other Maryland FReepers think of how to vote here. I know of a number of senior citizens who voted for Sobhani; in my opinion, they probably liked his tv ads. I haven’t seen any ads on Bongino.
Bongino is the real deal.
Cardin is an incompetent congressional critter imitating a US senator.
The idiots here all work for every fed agency you can imagine and will never elect a conservative senator!
I dont care anymore having lived in this sorry ass “state” since 1985! I retire in Jan 2013 and hope to get the hell out of this shitty little “state” asap!
After a period of investigation, Ben's House unearthed a list of individuals - movers and shakers who presumably received an early warning about the shenanigans and took flight with their deposits. Ben's next act was the sealing the list of those who received early warning, claiming disclosure wouldn't be useful.
Right. It wouldn't be useful to Ben's reputation, fortune or family reputation.
Sobhani is not a “Dem in disquise” or “paid”.
He’s a good guy. I talked to him a good deal at a Repub Xmas (ironically) party back in 2000. He is pretty solid but he does have issues - mainly that he’s Moslem and the connections that’s brought (Arab interests, etc).
So, I won’t be voting for him since he’s against the Repub, but I wouldn’t accuse him of the things you all suggest.
I didn’t accuse Sobhani of anything except possibly being a Democrat.
Now that I think of it, I guess that is awful nasty....
As far as I know... Sobhani converted to christianity and is a member of his wifes church.
During a Presidential election year, running a repub candidate for Senate, or any statewide office and spending money on it is idiotic... the numbers just aren’t there.
If the party in Md was smart... they would have quietly backed Sobhani, given that he is running as an ind.
Sobhani (lost 2 republican primary battles in the past) got on the ballot with signatures - no primary votes. I think I would vote for Cardin before I voted for him because I don't like what he did.
We have a good candidate, Bongino, and I for one will be supporting him.
Thanks for your post. I wish I knew more about the local elections. Basically, my mind has checked out of Maryland and I can’t wait to settle all my stuff here and move on, hopefully in the spring. I’m voting NO on all the referenda and spending, and will also vote for Bongino.
Sounds familiar. Isn't that what Barry Obama did -- joined Michelle's church for political connections?
you’d think for all that effort he’d at least run as a repub or dem. smh
