VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, California – A shark that bit and killed a surfer off of California's central coast probably was a great white and may have mistaken the boarder for prey, experts said Wednesday.

"Most shark attacks in California are caused by great whites. There's no other species that regularly occurs off of California that could inflict that kind of injury," said Andrew Nosal, a marine biologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla.

Yes, the media is more worried about the shark’s feelings than that of the deceased.

I have been informally tracking shark attacks since the mid 1960s for highly personal reasons.

Sharks are the top of the marine food chain and as such attack and eat anything and everything. The poorer the visibility the higher the chance of a shark attack.

As far as headlines go, I agree this has to be of the dumber ones.

Well after the Federal Government; then the State government; then the County government; then the City government; then the Beach Commission, and LifeGuards Union, finalize their total of 4,600 pages of testimony; DNA analysis; enviromental impact statements, (Yeah, there’s human blood on the beach that needs to sanitized by a federally approved HasMat team that disposes the blood soaked sand in a federally licensed hasmat disposal facility, after being delivered to the site by a bio-safe, isolated remains, truck, licenced by the Federal Government, which complys with the State of California mandated fuel standards,)

Surfing dude with assets of $500, will have cost us all $10,000,000 to determine his cause of death, while the left over shark tooth sticks out of his gut!

He must’ve been pretty good, you can see the footprints in the sand next to the board and judge the size. Looks like a pretty small board to me.

"... have an expert check it out."

Yeah, but wasn't this supposed to be an expert?

I got revenge on the shark population once upon a time about 25 years ago. I spotted a blue in the surf where we were swimming - a wave picked him up and tossed him on the beach. I grabbed his tail and dragged him further up on the beach and beat him to death with a big piece of wood (flotsam) that I found nearby.

He wasn't that big - 6 foot 10 inches if memory serves - and he was obviously injured. But, I put him out of his misery anyway.

may have mistaken the boarder for prey, experts said Wednesday.

A non-technical off the cuff guess is that the shark did not mistake the boarder for an ATM machine, but then I’m no “expert”.

Water is for making plants grow so we have nice things to eat. Corn, soybeans, and alfalfa can turned into ribeyes, milk and Haagen-Dazs.

Ocean water is not be entered by humans. Unseen things that can eat you live there; like great whites.

The movie Jaws was all the education I needed.

and may have mistaken the boarder for prey

Maybe the shark just wanted to say "hello" and things went horribly wrong.

Mistaken my foot, the kid was the prey of the great white.

Nonononono.... we must find the shark, capture it, and take it to an uninhabited area and release it. Damn the hundreds of thousands of dollars it would cost to do it. If it saves the life of one shark, it’s worth it.
