Logic dictates that Sununu is right. Lets break it down. Powell declared himself a Republican at least a decade a go. The Republican Party has been a solid center-right party for the last 40 years. The Democrat Party has been solid center-left for the last 40 years. In 2008 and 2012, the Republicans have nominated moderate conservative candidates, while the Democrats nominated clearly the most left wing candidate in their history. Powell supports the candidate that is clearly the opposite of what he purported to be his political views. That leaves only one component left, race. I would contend that Powell’s choice is more racially based than Maxine Waters, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson. Since these three individuals share Obama’ Leftism.

Your analysis is sound; yet perhaps not conclusive. There is another possible explanation, and that is that Powell's nose is out of joint over something that none of us is aware of.

This does not imply that there would be anything necessarily wrong in Powell making a racial decision, if he feels somehow related to Obama. Actually, acting out of possible pique would be less worthy than out of a sense of kinship.

Just my opinion, perhaps.
