Michigan Court of Appeals: Gun owners can open carry in district libraries

LANSING, MI -- Open-carry advocates notched a victory today before the Michigan Court of Appeals, which reversed a lower-court decision that had allowed the Capital Area District Library to ban guns inside its Lansing-area branches.

Two members of a three-judge panel concluded that district libraries such as CADL are "quasi-municipal" entities that, like other local public libraries, are subject to state law regarding gun possession.

Michigan law prohibits owners from bringing guns into schools, child care centers, sports arenas, churches, certain entertainment facilities, hospitals and colleges. But there is no statute prohibiting weapons from being brought into public libraries.

"Certainly, at a time where this country has witnessed tragic and horrific mass shootings in places of public gathering, the presence of weapons in a library where people of all ages—particularly our youth—gather is alarming and an issue of great concern," Judge Jane M. Beckering wrote in the majority opinion.

I read things like this and always wonder how many would be murderers consult the list before deciding where to carry out their plans..........If they do, it’s probably so they can pick a “gun free zone”.

Politicians are so silly.........

Considering the street trash that find their way to libraries these days because they are “free” and required to let you in, I’m glad that this ruling was made.

Preemption law is clear. Good ruling, because if it went the other way, CPL would be banned too.
