General Nathan Bedford Forrest should have his statue built.

He is probably the quintessential American of the era. Of daring, skill and redemption.

He was a slave trader before the war (but refused to break apart families).
Joined the Confederates as a private.
Rose to the rank of General.
Personally engaged and killed over 40 union soldiers.
Arguably the BEST general of the war - recruited, trained and armed his own armies (as the CSA could do nothing logically in the west).
Continually engaged numerically superior enemy forces which were always better armed and usually won.
His tactics are still studied at West Point.
After the war, founded the KKK to defend whites from the hardships of the post war south.
Disbanded the KKK when they become a terror organization.
Called the black man his brother and become a loyal American
