Going strictly by memory, the way I recall it is it was a suicide mission from the get go as far as anyone with half a brain was concerned. Carter was desperate and STOOPID enough to think it had a *remote* chance. At the time I thought the only explanation was that he refused to listen to his military advisers. I had hoped the advisers weren't that stupid.
