27 Cadets Injured in Brawl at U.S. Air Force Academy
CNS News ^ | 11-12-2012 | Susan Jones

Posted on 11/02/2012 8:47:21 AM PDT by Renfield

From the Military Times: An Air Force Academy tradition of throwing cadet first sergeants into the season's first snowfall ended in a brawl that left 27 cadets in need of medical treatment for everything from concussions, bitemarks, and cuts, according to an internal academy email obtained by the Air Force Times.

“This ritual has devolved to become increasingly violent, with significant numbers of cadets requiring medical care over the past two years," Dean of Faculty Brigadier Gen. Dana Born wrote in an email sent to Academy department heads.

She said the tradition of throwing cadets into the snow "has turned into a brawl between upperclassmen defending the first sergeant and the four degrees trying to capture the first sergeant."

“Obviously, this has gotten out of hand and cannot be repeated,” Born wrote. “There is no way we can condone or defend this.”

The article noted that the new Commandant of Cadets Brig. Gen. Greg Lengyel also found the brawl unacceptable, although -- as Born noted in her email -- he might be amenable to allowing cadets to keep some version of the tradition if they presented him a proposal for how it could be executed with “good order and discipline and proper risk management.”

sigh. Can only shake my head at the poor behavior of the USAF cadets.

Some of ‘em grow up and get real after academy life; others stay as locked up as they were when they were at the academy. Ring knockers...some are good, some are terrible.

All brawls and riots must be conducted with ‘good order and discipline’! You’re in the military! When your commanding officer orders you to riot....

The article refers to this as a “ritual” and a “tradition”.

Bull-loney.

It is hazing. And it is illegal. I would wonder who will get the sack, but I’m sure this will all be swept under the rug rather nicely.

Isn't that how Penetta handled the Benghazi attack?
And don't forget, diversity & tolerance HAVE to be included in the proposal too.
We are feckin' doomed.

I don’t recall this so-called “tradition” during my time at the Zoo and am curious when it started. I know of one celebratory tradition that was banned after a lot of injuries but not this one.

Upperclassmen should just stand aside and allow the plebes to carry the 1st Sergeant out. Top can put up a suitable struggle to make it more satisfying for the plebes. Into the snow, and everyone walks off in good spirits.

Clearly the cadets have too much time and energy. they also clearly don’t know how to operate without injury in snowy conditions. I suggest getting the PARARESCUE trainers out there and run the entire school through the arctic wilderness survival training. That would impart the proper skills, and will also take care of any excess time and energy they might have.

Have you ever been in the military? There is a thin line between "rituals" and "hazing."

In the Navy, both the Blue Nose (crossing the Artic Circle) and the Shellback (crossing the Equator) ceremonies are a form of hazing, but they are rich in their tradition. The people who typically get it the worst during these ceremonies, are those who complain, or attempt to fight back.

Of course, it's been years since I was in, and I'm sure the military is more enlightened now, especially with the current Commander-in-Chief. They probably don't even tack on crows anymore.

On the hill in Northfield, we used to burn a car when we switched from winter to summer uniforms. The seniors would buy a crappy car from someone on campus, go down to the parking lot and push it up to the parade ground. Then it would be set on fire and the seniors would dance around it like idiots throwing their “never to be worn” uniforms onto the car.

I don’t know how long it went on, but for the four years I was there it happened around Easter break every year.

Tossing First Sgts into the snow? What pussies.

I do not recall the specific occasion. Graduation Parade or 100th night are possibilities.

Many traditions, some fun, some not so much like serving confinements or walking tours. Just punishment perhaps for helping to publish the Dodo. /s

After my Shellback initiation aboard Kitty Hawk (pre-female at sea), we stripped to our union suits, threw the greasy, filthy clothes off the flight deck, and walked butt naked to the showers. Raw knees and hands from crawling on non-skid, getting whacked with pieces of fire hose, eating & wallowing in putrid stuff — but nobody complained. Too feminized and touchy-feely today.
