Same-sex marriage leading in Washington
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/2/12 | Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Political Writer

Tacoma, Wash. -- If you believe the polls, and many people here are wary even when they're favorable, then Washington voters are poised to legalize two things Californians haven't: same-sex marriage and marijuana.

With ballot measures on both issues before Washington voters Tuesday, the lessons learned from California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in 2008, and Proposition 19, which would have made marijuana legal but was shot down in 2010, have been echoing across Washington for months.

Some voters are noticing a different tone to the campaigns, with the issues being framed differently in a state where, in the case of marriage, there are proportionately fewer churchgoers than in California. In the case of the marijuana measure, there is far less political opposition from law enforcement.

"I feel like this campaign is coming from a different place than where Prop. 8 was coming from," Georgina Mendoza of Seattle, a 23-year-old graduate student and former Santa Barbara resident, told a canvasser supporting same-sex marriage who showed up on her doorstep this week.

"Prop. 8 seemed like it was all about civil rights and fairness. Which is good," Mendoza said. "But there's a lot more talk about family here this time."

In California and other states, polls often have shown early support for same-sex marriage and marijuana, only to have it fade as doubts and negative ad attacks swelled by election day. Across the nation, similar measures have been rejected in all 32 states where they have been on the ballot. Same-sex marriage measures are also on the ballots in Maryland, Minnesota and Maine.

I wish they would have done this with Abortion. We would only have about 10 states having abortion legal instead of 50. And that would have resulted in less abortions. Anyway, I wonder how Maryland will turn out on this issue....They also have a casino question, illegal alien getting in-state tuition (Governor Perry loved this one) and some others that I forgot but those are the three biggies.

Gee. Some surprise.

How about repealing all laws? Then there wouldn’t be any crime.

I live in WA State and the wording on the ballot for Prop 74 is so hard to understand Einstein would have trouble with it. Of course left-wing quacks out of Olympia came up with the confusing terminology on the ballot. Left-wing millionaire sodomites from all the country have poured money into the state to try and make Prop 74 pass. I see commercials daily in support of this immoral BS. I never seen a commercial supporting REAL marriage. There has been talk for years of Eastern Washington breaking away from the liberal cesspool of King County (Seattle), and becoming another state. It can be done. If queer “marriage” becomes law in the state look for real efforts to break the state in two. It’s damn time that the California liberals who have invaded the Seattle area quit dominating politics in the state of Washington. BUT, Maryland will vote for queer “marriage” before WA because of the time zone. I get sick and nauseated even talking about it. There needs to be a spiritual awakening in this country or we’re going to last much longer as a nation. God will not be mocked!

I’ve been hoping one of the pro pervert canvassers would show up at my door or call me. Unfortunately I live in the PRS (Peoples Republic of Seattle) so I don’t think they will bother.

I totally agree. I’m from the Eastern part and I would vote to break away from the other side of the Cascades, either as a separate state or part of Idaho.

This has been the result of a painstakingly thorough ad campaign, with tens of thousands of dollars sunk into market research and voter targeting.

I’m praying that people’s better angels wake up in time and are on the alert. After all, just a few short years ago, the “everything but marriage” civil union law just barely squeaked by. You’d think that would be enough, and that marriage would be a bridge too far for the 47% of Washingtonians who voted against the civil union law.

Have heart. Awkwardly worded ballots have shown time and time again that they confuse both sides equally. The strategy of intentionally misleading ballots backfires as often as not.

I agree, I’m just on the East side of the cascades, I would prefer if that line was on the west side of the hill. You hit the downward slope on the East side and Washington turns into a Red state. The I-5 corridor screws the rest of the state during elections.

To all Washington State voters:

If you have not voted on R-74 yet, a proposition that would turn the definition of marriage on its head, stop and think about it.

Biology 101. Our bodies, no matter what our mind says, are heterosexual. Every fiber of our being, our DNA is male or female. This fact is not made more or less true depending on what we “feel” or who we “love”. Human beings were designed physically to be with the opposite sex. Our ability to procreate is heterosexual. We should understand this as plainly as we understand that food goes in to our mouth and not our ear.

“Love” Doesn’t Make It Right. Love can not be our litmus test for right or wrong. For normal or abnormal. There are a lot of sexual perversions out there and homosexuality is just one of them. If simply having a sexual urge makes it normal then pedophiles are normal. Putting a white picket fence around sexual perversions won’t make them normal or right. It won’t limit the harm they cause to the individual and to society. Young people who struggle with homosexuality need to hear from grown ups who can say “I love you, but don’t go down that road.”

The Origin of NICE. In Middle English “nice” meant foolish. In Anglo-French, it meant silly, simple. In Latin it meant ignorant, or “not to know”. When it comes to people be compassionate. But don’t be “nice” about the politics of homosexuality. It is the battering ram that is being used to destroy the family and the Church. An anarchy of the mind and body that would inflict that chaos on society, on our children. Don’t let it happen. Stand firm in your defense of the family, of marriage, of right and wrong. Take a stand on Tuesday and reject R-74.
