Saturday at noon there will be gas rationing for passenger vehicles in 12 counties.
Gov. Chris Christie signed an executive order today instituting gas rationing for the purchase of fuel by motorists in 12 counties.
Calling the fuel supply a "shortage" that could endanger public health, safety and welfare, the rationing will take place in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties.
The order restricts the sale of fuel for use in passenger cars depending upon whether their license ends in an even or odd number, the order said.

There are lines because there is no power to the stations that should be open. Gas stations in this area are required by law to have generators so they can continue selling when the grid goes down during a hurricane event. 90% of the recovery is driven by private citizens going about their business. That requires gas for their vehicles.
The only way to make it work is to bring an entire tanker truck filled with gasoline to a place where people need it for generators rather than for their cars. As time goes on and more and more people (and gas stations) get their power restored, your ability to get a huge premium on your fuel diminishes.
Also tankers having port problems
The American Automobile Association estimates that 60 percent of gas stations in New Jersey and 70 percent in New York's Long Island are closed. Authorities say 13 of the 34 fuel terminals around New York have no power.
well... any port in a storm... just dock it and have the residents come up with their gas cans if you have to.
//sarcasm
It is a good idea. Lines will be cut in half.
I guess this means no sale to gas cans and no self serve. Wouldn’t work in Missouri where 98% of gas sold is self-serve.
what seems strange about the order to me, in my ignorance on the situation on the ground, is
that the “damage reports” on the news have been greater for the NJ shore areas from Atlantic City north, but only two of the counties on the list, Monmouth and Middlesex have areas directly on the shore
maybe the folks down at the shore either already left or have no where to go anyway??? /sarc
I assume you’re joking.
Gladhanding Obama I understood. But Christie is losing me with this socialist rationing/”anti-gouging” garbage. This is basic, bedrock Americanism that is being attacked with this nonsensical idiocy.
This sort of policy worked in the 1970’s, when gas stations were manned by attendants. But how can it be enforced in an age of self-serve pumps?
No self serve allowed in NJ... never has been
Should be...
Krispy Kreme signs order to ration donuts to NJ governor.
What the?!?!?
That's interesting. In California, full-service gas stations are about as commonplace as taco stands in Wales, and on a trip last summer to Pennsylvania and New York, which border Jersey, I don't think I ever went to a full-serve station. I just assumed self-serve stations were universal.
Lived here all my life, and still don’t understand why... also, no Beer sold at stations either. Gotta go to the liquor store for that.
Everywhere but New Jersey...and Oregon.
You dasn't pump your own gas in either state.
Wants to make sure no non-Union power companies can get gas for the trip back home...
