CITY OF NEWBURGH — A Newburgh cop and three others were stabbed early Saturday at a party honoring a recent homicide victim.
City police said the officer was stabbed multiple times around 2:35 a.m. at a Dry Dock nightclub event honoring Justin “J-Doc” Doctor, 23, who was killed Oct. 14. The officer was trying to arrest somebody involved in a fight.
The cop received a stab wound to the neck, and was treated at St. Luke’s Hospital. The officer is now in stable condition at a trauma center, police said.
Some 200 friends and relatives came out to 90 Broadway for the party, said James Balaguer, Doctor’s brother. People who didn’t know Doctor were also at the club, he said.
Between 80 and 100 people were gathered outside when police arrived, police said, with two people involved in a fight.
The man accused of stabbing the cop was taken into custody and a knife was recovered, police said.
City of Newburgh resident Demetrus Ware, 28, was arrested at the scene at 2:48 a.m. and charged with criminal possession of a loaded firearm with intent to use unlawfully, a felony, along with disorderly conduct, a violation.
It’s unclear if Ware is linked to the stabbing of the cop.
Three other people suffered stab wounds at the scene. Two were flown to trauma centers, while the third was treated and released locally.
Detectives were at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla Saturday afternoon checking up on the victims, according to city police. Some of the glass on the Dry Dock front entrance door had shattered.
Doctor was shot at 5 a.m. Oct. 14 near the Game Time Sports Cafe on Liberty Street. It was the city’s fifth homicide in 2012.
The suspect remains at large.
Proceeds from the $10 cover at Friday’s party would go to Doctor’s family, according to a flyer advertising the event. It featured a musical tribute from local disc jockeys.
Balaguer was upset that the tribute to his brother had been marred by violence. He said he had left the party prior to the fracas.
Police haven’t released the names of the injured cop or injured civilians.
