The 2012 elephant in the room: George W. Bush
Baltimore Sun ^ | Oct 29 2012 | Jules Witcover

One of the most telling aspects of the 2012 presidential campaign now racing to its end is the matter of the vanishing former two-term Republican president. His name is so seldom mentioned by his party's nominee and other stalwarts as to take on the characteristic of a toxic distant uncle.

That other GOP two-termer, Ronald Reagan, continues posthumously to enjoy the stature of political sainthood among the faithful. But the 43rd president, who is the son and namesake of the 41st, has been neither seen nor heard from in the blizzard of speech-making and television advertising by and in behalf of party standard-bearer Mitt Romney.

Yes, the missing person in the picture would be George W. Bush, now seemingly under party house arrest back in Texas as Mr. Romney runs as far away as he can get from Mr. Bush and his White House tenure. Memories of the junior Bush economic hangover haunt not only President Barack Obama, still struggling to recover from it, but also the Republican who wants Mr. Bush's old job.

Just like Jesus. Jesus didn’t defend himself either.

but I will lay that at the feat of Boehner, who has already said that they will not repeal ObamaCare.

Boehner has said no such thing.

You might recall that those cuts were temporary, he should have never agreed to that nonsense.

Making them temporary was the only to get them passed by a simple majority of the Senate. Otherwise the Democrats in the Senate would have filibustered and blocked the tax cuts.

Recall that, at the time, the Senate was split 50-50 and it took Cheney's vote to break the tie. Whereupon Jumpin' Jim Jeffords switched parties and Tom Daschle became Senate Majority Leader.

My, you're awfully negative tonight. That time of the month...???

The 2010 GOP victory was because of the Tea Party not GWB.

Hope you won't mind my quoting a portion of one of your posts from back in October :

I (like several others here) am wondering what the OP hoped to accomplish by posting this?

Recall that, at the time, the Senate was split 50-50 and it took

Well As I recall Trent Lott worked out a shared power deal, then Jumpin Jim turned on him.

If Romney wins and the current leaders keep their post, then all we have accomplished is a delay.

I am getting a little long in the tooth to swear by every memory, some are accurate, some not so much, but the memory is still vivid. :)

A few things I do remember that are absolutey fact.

No President since Eisenhower has done one thing to stem the flow of illegals into this country, why is that?

I remember when I went to school from 8th grade through 12th, that 25¢ a day would buy me a hamburger, a bowl of soup and a soft drink, not one increase in 6 years. Why is That?

That same quarter would get me into a double feature movie with enough change to buy a popcorn, a soda and a candy bar. Why is that?

I remember going to the drug store and old Otto would mix up our medicine while we waited. No penicillin, but Otto could always whip up something, even put a little cherry syrup in the ones that tasted so awful that you had to hold your nose. Cant do that anymore. Why is that?

I could walk anywhere all alone and never fear, we had cars with keys left in them and doors that were never locked and no one stole any thing. Why is that?

I could take a 22 rifle to school and leave it in the cloak room, so I could hut rabbit after school, now you cant even draw a picture of a gun. Why is that?

Could just be a coincidence but we began to abandon God in our schools and government, after WW II. Why is that?

If Romney loses, he'll be a victim of Bush's unpopularity, just like Landon in 36 was defeated because of the public's continued resentment of Herbert Hoover.

Oh?

Being a RINO and a MORMON will have no effect?

Poor George; now even FRepublicans are still blaming him!

So many people have believed the brainwashing that those 8 years under Bush were nothing but a living hell. They talk about this failed disastrous economic policies but if I have the numbers right unemployment was lower for most of those 8 years than it has been for the entire 4 years under the current president.

Not me! I still have great respect for GWB!

Bush didn’t try to defend himself in the MSM because he was confident and comfortable with the decisions he made. He knew no amount of appearances on “The View” or interviews with Katie Couric, would change their opinions of him.

Bush came out early on and professed his faith in Jesus Christ..this doomed him with the MSM and liberal left from that point on.

Bush was the right man at the right time!
