Obama to make statement on economy Friday By Mark Felsenthal | Reuters – 48 mins ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Newly re-elected President Barack Obama will make a statement on the economy on Friday, the White House said, setting the stage for a showdown with congressional Republicans over contentious tax and spending issues.

The president is likely to discuss looming tax increases and government spending cuts - the so-called fiscal cliff - that would go into effect early next year unless Congress acts to prevent them. He is due to make the statement from the East Room of the White House at 1:05 p.m. (1805 GMT).

Obama, who defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney on Tuesday in a race in which the two candidates offered different visions for jump-starting the sluggish economy, is not expected to put forward a new or specific plan.

Instead, he is more likely to urge Congress to tackle the fiscal cliff and try to cut the massive U.S. budget deficit. Analysts have said that if left unaddressed, the abrupt fiscal tightening would knock the economy back into recession.

Congressional Republicans have already begun to stake out their position on ways to spare the already modest economic recovery from a fiscal shock. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner is scheduled to hold a news conference earlier on Friday.

The president's advisers told reporters earlier on Thursday that dealing with the fiscal cliff would be an immediate priority. The administration sees Obama's re-election an endorsement of his position that affluent Americans should see their taxes rise, they said.

He should just rerun his last one. I won't be watching or listening my TV is off so is my radio for now. The government is dead to me so are all the pundits who make their living by highlighting the games our government plays.
F them all

Boehner from Ohio, Ryan from Wisconsin. That worked well for the GOP on November 6th.

I don’t know why you keep calling John “Boner”? There’s nothing stiff about him and I doubt he has balls that are any bigger than the ball bearings on a skate board. Or the intelligence of those types of riders....dude.

Obama is the enemy, not Boehner. I hope we remember that.

True, .......BUT to say that " Obamacare is the law of the land" and just roll over and play dead is not exactly REPRESENTING us..This is weak. The Democrats know better how to fight!!

Just two questions that are on my mind. How do we get rid of Boehner as Speaker? And won’t the media at some point also be hit by Barry’s wrecked economy...surely colleagues, family and friends will lose jobs, struggle with higher taxes, suffer Obamacare, etc.

You are spot on. Don’t let the childish noobs annoy. The speaker has fewer cards in his hand and should take his time playing them. He already knows that Obama tends to go all nasty and arrogant and it would be helpful if we could get him on tape being exactly that.

Here’s the facts. OBAMACARE IS INDEED THE LAW OF THE LAND. Now, read that over again. Boehner did not make this a fact. The election did.

How do we get rid of Boehner as Speaker?

This has been top on my list of questions. WHO in the Republican party do we contact? I have already left a message on his phone and commented on his webpage that we are disgruntled, unhappy , and want LEADERSHIP and he needs to step down NOW!

It would be foolish to make a deal now with the heat of the election still on us.

Precisely!!!!!!!!

No Boehner isn’t the enemy. He’s just an ineffectual dufus that generally hurts our cause as bad or worse than an enemy. All the while he vascelates between laughing and crying... while wringing his hands.

I sure wish he’d change party affiliations, so he could hurt the Democrats as effectively as he has our side.

If I were speaker, I’d stall. I’d do anything to run down the clock until December 31. This is a cliff I want to drive off of, Thelma.

The phrase “fiscal cliff” is becoming quite passé. How about they use the phrase “Grecian Formula” instead?

“let him present his economic plan to the American people”

Agree...

All Boehner has to say is “the House of Representatives eagerly awaits your plan and solution to this crisis and when it arrives we will work diligently to to meet the needs of the American people”

I’ve tried for a hour to leave a comment on John Boehner’s website to STEP UP or STEP DOWN! It is freezing up so I am hoping that zillions of Pubbies are leaving him their sentiments!

Before you call again, take a look at what you have: 1. A minority of house members who will do the right thing for America (a majority will cave). 2. A supreme court that is the most frightened since FDR and just caved in to a plan to destroy the private health care industry.

Now look at what they have: 1. majority American support. 2. senate with a finger on the nuclear button 3. all of the media 4. a president with lots of "flexibility" who pisses on the constitution and is waiting for an excuse to use his own nuclear options.

Your solution: tell Boehner to tip over the negotiating table and lose to the media outrage.

The right solution: talk about generalities, agree on some publicly and disagree on others. Wait with an "open mind" for the specific offer. A serious offer won't come until the Senate is pressured by their corporate interests to negotiate with Boehner. Hopefully that will take us to the cliff and beyond because that will get us the best offer.

My Fantasy: If I were Speaker for a day, things would get a bit rough.

At this point, I don’t see the good guys winning a damn thing, so why get a headache over it?

I would hold a news conference and explain to the American people that they are going to get what they asked for. I’d detail to them how we would have fixed the economy, using Romney’s plan. Then I would acknowledge that they chose Obama and that I was not going to give Obama or his democrats any resistance whatsoever. Suddenly, those asshat dems wouldn’t have anyone to argue with or blame the failures on.

I would remind Obama that although he failed the first 4 years, he has again promised America that he had the plan to fix it all. Then I’d tell Obama it’s time for him to keep his promise.

I would say to Obama, “You Won”, and it’s all yours. I would send all but one congressman home. That congressman’s only job would be to rubber-stamp anything that the dems presented.

Then within a few months, I would watch it all crash.... and Obama would own it all.

From the ashes we would rebuild.

LOL... I know, it’s crazy, but what the heck, everything is going to crash anyway. Please don’t spank me... I said it was a fantasy. ;>)
