PETRAEUS COLLEAGUE: Biographer Paula Broadwell 'Got Her Claws Into Him'
businessinsider.com ^ | 11/10/2012http://www.businessinsider.com/general-petraeus-affair-paula-broadwell-went-from-likable-t | Robert Johnson

I reached out to a senior military source who has worked with Petraeus, (P4) as he's referred to within the service, and who helped provide background information for Broadwell's book. I'll call the officer "James Downing"). A transcript of our conversation follows:

BI: Did anyone know about the affair before today?

James: I'm not sure anyone really "knew", per se. But it's one of those things that, as soon as the announcement was made, I knew in an instant who it was. Everything made sense. Who had exclusive access to him? Who wrote the hagiography on his life? Who framed their entire existence around his persona? It wasn't hard to make the guess, and the rest is public knowledge now. One day, she's celebrating her birthday as an accomplished (if you want to use that term) author and PhD candidate, the next she's Paula Jones.

BI: Did you know Broadwell long?

James: I've known her for a few years, probably five or six. When she started work on the bio she called me for background on one of the general's previous deployments. I probably gave her four hours or so, and we stayed in touch after that by email and an occasional phone call. Over that time, she went from someone very likeable to a shameless self-promoting prom queen. A very disturbing shift in how she carried herself. If she knew P4 was going to make an appearance at an event, she'd crash it without an invitation (she actually did this at the wedding of some close friends of mine) and photo bomb[ed] sic everyone there.

Check out this letter to the editor of the NYT earlier this year. (July 13, 2012) The plot thickens.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/15/magazine/a-message-from-beyond.html?_r=0

MY WIFE’S LOVER

“My wife is having an affair with a government executive. His role is to manage a project whose progress is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership. (This might seem hyperbolic, but it is not an exaggeration.) I have met with him on several occasions, and he has been gracious. (I doubt if he is aware of my knowledge.) I have watched the affair intensify over the last year, and I have also benefited from his generosity. He is engaged in work that I am passionate about and is absolutely the right person for the job. I strongly feel that exposing the affair will create a major distraction that would adversely impact the success of an important effort. My issue: Should I acknowledge this affair and finally force closure? Should I suffer in silence for the next year or two for a project I feel must succeed? Should I be “true to my heart” and walk away from the entire miserable situation and put the episode behind me?” NAME WITHHELD

Don’t expose the affair in any high-profile way. It would be different if this man’s project was promoting some (contextually hypocritical) family-values platform, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The only motive for exposing the relationship would be to humiliate him and your wife, and that’s never a good reason for doing anything. This is between you and your spouse. You should tell her you want to separate, just as you would if she were sleeping with the mailman. The idea of “suffering in silence” for the good of the project is illogical. How would the quiet divorce of this man’s mistress hurt an international leadership initiative? He’d probably be relieved.

The fact that you’re willing to accept your wife’s infidelity for some greater political good is beyond honorable. In fact, it’s so over-the-top honorable that I’m not sure I believe your motives are real. Part of me wonders why you’re even posing this question, particularly in a column that is printed in The New York Times.

Your dilemma is intriguing, but I don’t see how it’s ambiguous. Your wife is having an affair with a person you happen to respect. Why would that last detail change the way you respond to her cheating? Do you admire this man so much that you haven’t asked your wife why she keeps having sex with him? I halfway suspect you’re writing this letter because you want specific people to read this column and deduce who is involved and what’s really going on behind closed doors (without actually addressing the conflict in person). That’s not ethical, either.

For goodness sake. The blame game begins. Both parties are guilty. But if you want to blame the woman, it only highlights what a weak soul Petraus was.

Maybe she should have been the head of the CIA since she supposedly ruled the actual head of the CIA.

Last night I looked at hubby and said....wth is wrong with these people? He destroyed his career and marriage for a roll in the hay. That is the same thing as if you were sleeping with one of your female firefighters. (He was Captain of a station that at one time had up to 3 female firefighters).
He simply looked at me and said....I would never do that. I sighed and said I knew that.

I just read that NYT ‘letter’. I ran across this post on another forum and went ‘hmmmmmmmm’:

Word out…is that the above letter I posted from the NYT’s July of 2012….was meant for Petraeus….Yet it ran affair the affair was over….So that letter was a THREAT…a threat to mind his P’s and Q’s….

Blackmail? …Why? …..For what purposes? A 4 star General, a particularly ambitious one ….would not want to go down in the trash heap of history….

If this is being leaked…a letter from July of 2012…. That ran in the New York Times, The Ethicist….it is because someone wants the people to know Petraeus was being blackmailed….someone from inside the FBI or the CIA….

Was this a shot across his bow to stand down as their planned kidnap scheme went forth…or to stand down as Missile Running was taking place to AlQaeda…or what?

As a result, I think he can recover and continue to be a player on the national stage, but she's toast. Her reputation is unrecoverable, in my opinion.

Perhaps she was on to something big. Very big. So the FBI was brought in to take her out.

Agreed. Another article:

http://www.newsmax.com/Headline/petraeus-resigns-cia-affair/2012/11/09/id/463573

makes it clear that Obama and his inner circle of traitors knew of this situation “for months” and were delaying the FBI investigators advice to ask for his resignation “until after the election” - if ever. This was a card up their sleeve they would hold until they needed it - and they needed it before he was to testify about Libya. While the major concern of the FBI was national security and potential for blackmail, he apparently did not read the letter to the editor posted above, and may have been clueless he had been found out until now. Doubt Zero played his card until after the election was secure and cooperation in the coverup was needed. Petrayus is a patriot, though flawed, and he has now freed himself to testify without recourse, he will not be beholden to the Coward in Chief.

When the FBI patriots stand up to clarify the extent of the coverup including the delay of things until after the election, potentially leaving blackmail potential for an unacceptably long time, even some Democrats will hopefully see the light. Hate to say it, but we need to prepare ourselves for President Biden after this exponentially worse than Watergate investigation culminates in either resignation or impeachment, let’s just hope he can pick an intelligent VP.

A collegue expressed shock that people in such positions seem to self destruct. I pointed out that men like Petraeus are political animals. Political animals may actin ways that benefit the common good, but they are mostly self-serving. Often, their appetites lead to their own downfalls.

I hope this plan of theirs backfires and Petraeus spills his guts. If they let him live long enough.

Obama named Petraeus to CIA because he was known as a man with integrity, and it kept him off the VP list for 2012. The real question will be, how long has the FBI known? Did they find out during his vetting, (they would have asked him) or did it subsequently come to their attention. And what foreign intelligence agencies knew? Iran, Pakistan, Muslim Brotherhood? That would be more disturbing.

The double standard is this: If Petraeus were a Democrat, this whole thing would blow over (no pun intended) and he’d be ready to run for office by the next election cycle (think Clinton, Barney Frank, Elliot Spitzer, etc). But as a Republican, he’s pretty much done, I would expect.

I despise anybody that cheats on their spouse. I have been married for 29 years and have never ever thought about doing that. In my business over the years I’ve known clients and acquaintances that have cheated and carried on affairs and it just kills me that I can’t say anything. Most of the participants are single women after high profiled Corporate men at the top and are leaches. They know exactly what they are doing.

Let’s not forget that WikiLeaks has gotten access to a lot of emails etc. And the Chinese have been trying to hack the DoD websites for a long time. What if one of them found these emails.

If it turns out that a foreign entity had knowledge of this and this impaired Petraeus’ decision making, then it becomes treasonous.
