The big problem is that fewer people voted for Romney than McCain. Which means a lot of people stayed home.

I keep reading this claim. Could you please provide the data that demonstrates your claim is correct?

Wasn’t me with the claim, but I’ll chime in:

2008: McCain/Palin 61.2 Million votes

2012: Romney/Ryan 58.2 Million votes

So, that’s about 2 million less votes. This still leaves the question of where they went - dead, escaped to foreign lands, or stayed at home. Factor in that effectively, more than 2 million less voted, in the sense that the population grew by a few percent over 4 years.

archives.gov has the prior election totals. McCain got 59.6 million roughly, Romney got 58.5 million roughly.

Some suggest that this is due to old Republicans dying off means that they aren’t being replaced by younger Republicans entering the ranks of registered voters.

My real fear is that some stayed home because they didn’t like Romney. Staying home is always a vote for the incumbent effectively.
