I have no doubt OBama attempted to blackmail Petraus with the revelation of the affair and Petraus just decided to own up. Yep, Petraus is smart enought to realize that this is one of those things that WILL blow up eventually, so he might as well deal with it now and salvage some shreds of his honor.
