I think all the FBI had to do to trace the owners/users of the anonymous gmail account was to obtain from Google the IP addresses of those using the account and then trace those IP addresses to other email accounts/activity...and voila.

I'll bet the FBI's collective heads exploded when they discovered one was from the CIA wifi.

I bet the FBI already knew that they were having an affair when they did a security check on Petraeus being vetted for the CIA director’s position.
