Why didn’t Petreaus simply “resign/retire to spend more time with his family”?

What I found odd was his statement in his resignation admitting to the affair. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a high ranking official putting it that way before.
me neither. It was a give way to me that Petreus’ resignation is NOT about the affair.
