The all-business-class flights began in 2004 and will halt by the end of next year. The Newark-Singapore flight covered 9,506 miles and lasted about 18.5 hours, while the Los Angeles-Singapore flight covered 8,746 miles and lasted about 16 hours. A round-trip flight on the Newark route was expected to cost about 12,570 Singapore dollars (US$10,260) in mid-November; while a similar trip to Los Angeles was expected to cost about S$9,000 (US$7,300).

An 18 hour flight sounds completely miserable

Especially for anyone close to this one:

Obama’s fault. Who wants to fly 18 hours to do business here?

I did JFK-Hong Kong (and back) a few years ago.Exactly 16 hours (wheels up to wheels down) heading westbound. And that was in coach! However, for years my policy on flights over a couple of hours has been to spend as much time as possible walking around. That's because of advice my cardiologist gave me to prevent DVT and related problems.I've done several other long flights as well...15 hours to Australia,14 hours from Dubai to JFK and a few others (all in Coach). If you have a plan they're not *that* bad.Of course they'd be better in Business Class or First Class.

Actually, that flight is by Singaport Airlines and is all business class. Their seats are 30" wide (lots of room compared to the roughly 18" you get in a regular coach seat) and can be reclined fully flat into a bed. They have personal entertainment stations embedded with lots of movies, TV, and music. Service on Singapore Airlines is apparently incredible too.

I was once booked on this flight but my trip got cancelled. My brother did take it though and he said it was the best flight he'd ever been on.

My daughter has taken the Newark to Singapore flight twice in the last year. Loves the seats, accommodations and service. Not one complaint. By the way, she has done the NY- LA- Singapore. Increased hrs/hassle with “layover”, etc

I flew Singapore Airlines on the Airbus 380, riding in coach from Heathrow to Singapore.

Wonderful service! Singapore is a wonderful airport.

My longest flight was Cairo-JFK in 1997 was 14 hours on a B777. Not all uncomfortable. Took an 11-hour flight from Salisbury, Rhodesia, to Gatwick. Don’t remember the airline, possibly Air Zimbabwe.

I've flown the 380 once...Dubai to JFK.Nice aircraft for sure but,IMO,no better than the 777.A very nice flight,however...even in Coach.Emirates does a good job.

Longest flight I have taken was from Morón Air Base in Spain, to Travis Air Force Base, California. 14 hours takeoff to landing, on this C-5.

Thankfully, the aircrew was a bunch of Travis reservists (as was I), and they let me fly with them in the aircrew area rather than the passenger area in the back.

Air Zimbabwe?

Do you mind if I take out a LARGE life insurance policy on you with me listed as the beneficiary?

Yup. Don’t know if Air Zim is still in business. If Air Zim is being run by the same people that run their economy, then I’d say that AZ is grounded.

That was a long time ago, Bwana. I don’t ever plan on going back to Africa. I did take one internal Air Zim flight. A buddy of mine and I flew on a prop job to Wankie National Park for a walking/photo safari. Some beer-drinking was included.

“That was a long time ago, Bwana.”

Time flies when you are having fun, huh?

Looks like some of us have been having WAY too much fun, thereby causing the decades to slip away. :-)

That was a great long weekend. I still have yet to see a big cat in the wild. FWIW, one of our fellow pax on that flight was the recently-deceased Herbert Lom.
