What does Barack Obama’s re-election as President mean for the future of the United States and for the President’s place in history? Both liberals celebrating his electoral victory, and conservatives who fear for the future of the country, may be surprised by the thoughtful, serious and provocative answer to this question in: I Am the Change, Barack Obama and the Crisis of Liberalism by Charles Kesler, best known as the editor of the Claremont Review of Books, but also a professor of government at Claremont McKenna College and a Senior Fellow at the Claremont Institute. Full disclosure, this columnist is a member of the CRB’s Publication Committee.
Kesler brings to his analysis the perspective of the distinctive Claremont political philosophy which is grounded in the founding principles as articulated in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. But, this book is no political polemic. Rather, it is serious and nuanced analysis of the President, his political accomplishments and agenda by a true “student of the game”, and historian of American political philosophy. Although the book was published before the election, it is all the more relevant now that President Obama has been re-elected.
Kesler places Obama in the historical context of the American Progressive/liberal movement, an American political tradition more than 100 years old. Understanding that Obama’s efforts to “transform America” are not simply rooted in anti-colonialist Kenyan soil, as propounded in the movie, 2016 recognizes the full extent of Obama’s pedigree and the power of the Progressive movement. The condensed, but highly readable seminar on the evolution of political thought provided by Kesler reveals the depth to which Progressive ideas have permeated not only the political system, but also our political discourse, and in a significant way made possible Obama’s re-election in spite of the poor economy.

I get the sense that the author is a left-wing,liberal despite it having been reviewed in Forbes. Barack Obama is, in the pantheon of US Presidents, a political freak, and history will show he has no place, no place at all to be included among otherwise good-willed, well-intentioned men, however inept they might have been, who would be president.
Whereas,Jimmy Carter had no idea what he was doing, at least he had some governmental experience as elected governor of Georgia.
Barack Obama need not have any governmental,managerial skill, experience whatsoever, he may not have to born in this country as eligibility for President, have grades at Harvard higher than D-, have the slightest idea about economic matters, or give a rat's rear end about world affairs, and a multitude of other kills, abilities running the world's only superpower demands.
No, he needs none of them.
And that's because in the single-minded objective about what he wants to do as president, that is the destruction, evisceration, dismantling of of the United States of America, you need not be any more than the empty suit, the arrogant, elitist empty suit that he is, to facilitate the goals he has set out to do to the United States of America.
Although the book was published before the election, it is all the more relevant now that President Obama has been re-elected.

Great article. Thanks for posting. I take exception to the expert though. Teddy Roosevelt was the first progressive President and he formed the Bull Moose Party to offer a liberal alternative to the Republicans.

The LEFT does not recognize traditional modes of morality and ethics—TRUE. The Constitution is a barrier to them. However, they have their own value sysem: social justice, classless society, redistribution, “fairness”, the end justifies the means, obliteration of “racist society”, primacy of the state, abhorrance of individualism, proliferation of new “rights” and so forth. They are ruthless in their pursuit of those principles. THEY ARE MARXISTS. Call it what it is.

Frank Luntz made a profound point the other day on Hannity. He suggested that we need to change the language we use in describing traditional Americanism.
We have allowed the LEFT to define “capitalism” and “trickle down”. They use terms like inequity, uncaring, unfairness, inequality to frame their arguments.
We need to use terms like “economic freedom” instead.
