Making it a marriage proposal to remember, a basketball coach decided to pop the question to his girlfriend during a halftime game, dressed as his team's mascot - a bright red panther.

Craig Heatherly, 24, an assistant trainer for the Davenport University Panthers in Caledonia, Michigan, performed the stunt during his school's annual Midnight Madness event last Friday.

Disguised as Pounce the cat, he appeared on the court and pretended to feign an injury, prompting his girlfriend Linaya Hass to help him, before he whipped off his headpiece and got down on one knee.

I hate crap like this. The jerks who pull these stunts put the girl's in an impossible situation. Even if they don't want to marry the guy but still be friends, they are almost forced to say yes to avoid humiliating the guy in front of thousands of people or in front of a national audience. At least once I would like to see a girl say NO to a guy who pulls a stunt like this.

he appeared on the court and pretended to feign an injury, prompting his girlfriend Linaya Hass to help him ...

If he ACTUALLY feigned an injury, I could see how this would work, but if he only pretended to ... gee, I dunno.

Why not entertain the possibillity that She had been pressing him to get married, He decided to cave in this way rather than the candlelight dinner with ring.

He didn’t actually pretend to feign, he only feigned pretending to feign.

For those who don’t wish to read the article, they’ve been dating for a year, she said yes, and they set a date next August.

I don’t think much of his proposal, but I guess it works for some people.

And Ms. Hass is sooo absolutely NOT GUILTY!

I don’t think they are all jerks as you describe, only that a certain subset of jerks would purposely use such tactics to put a girlfriend (soon to be ex girlfriend) in an embarrassing spot.

If the guy knows he’s going to get a yes (he’d better know!) then these stunts are harmless. Just their way of trying to be “romantic”, as tacky and replusive as some ideas may appear to others.

I don’t like crap like this either.

My gf keeps Telling me that we will be married, or else.

Or else what? I was single before I met her. I may just be better off alone I think sometimes.....

My gf keeps Telling me that we will be married, or else.

LOL.

That's not much of a threat these days.

Be warned, though. I had a GF that I refused to marry (WAYYY too much baggage), and she stuck to me like a friggin' coat of paint.

.. Actually just a few months ago a story was posted about a guy who asked his girl at a hockey game on the “Jumbotron” and she stormed out yelling “no”. It was quite entertaining.

He's NOT a coach; he's an athletic trainer.....

An athletic trainer is responsible for the prevention and care of athletic injuries. They do NOT coach.

Now, having said that, the kid is still a doofus....
