Oh, We Forgot to Tell You...(VDH)
realclearpolitics.com ^ | 11/15/2012 | Victor Davis Hanson

The second-term curse goes like this: A president (e.g., Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, etc.) wins re-election, but then his presidency implodes over the next four years -- mired in scandals or disasters such as Watergate, Iran-Contra, Monica Lewinsky, the Iraqi insurgency and Hurricane Katrina.

Apparently, like tragic Greek heroes, administrations grow arrogant after their re-election wins. They believe that they are invincible and that heir public approval is permanent rather than fickle.

The result is that Nemesis zeroes in on their fatal conceit and with a boom corrects their hubris. Or is the problem in some instances simply that embarrassments and scandals, hushed up in fear that they might cost an administration an election, explode with a fury in the second term?

Coincidentally, right after the election we heard that Iran had attacked a U.S. drone in international waters.

Coincidentally, we just learned that new food stamp numbers were "delayed" and that millions more became new recipients in the months before the election.

Coincidentally, we now gather that the federal relief effort following Hurricane Sandy was not so smooth, even as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Barack Obama high-fived it. Instead, in Katrina-like fashion, tens of thousands are still without power or shelter two weeks after the storm.

Coincidentally, we now learn that Obama's plan of letting tax rates increase for the "fat cat" 2 percent who make over $250,000 a year would not even add enough new revenue to cover 10 percent of the annual deficit. How he would get the other 90 percent in cuts, we are never told.

If Benghazi doesn’t take down this administration, nothing will.

They managed to duck and weave their way out of Fast and Furious. They managed to get away with passing off a questionable birth certificate. They managed to shuffle two terrorist attacks on military grounds (recruiting and a base) as simple rogue operations. If the death of 4 Americans can’t be hung around this president’s neck, then he truly is a Teflon executive.

And with every victory in corruption, they’ll become more arrogant, confident and sloppy.
The closed door meeting today with the 4-star is going to be nothing more than a retirement negotiation.

Imagine if an American president endured 3000 deaths on their own soil, while having intel of a possible attack. Imagine if he then invaded a country that had nothing to do with the attack.

The point is not that Bush was worse than Obama. The point is that they are all crooks and on the same team.

Yet on FR, we are looking for impeachment again. My stupid liberal friends want to blame everything on Bush.

As long as both sides do not understand they are being hosed, we will continue to be treated like waste product.

F&F is still very much alive, and is possibly more serious than Benghazi.

And we aren’t “just now” learning the tax hike on the rich will only bring in 10% of revenue needed......we’ve known that for a long time. The idiot liberals aren’t called idiot for nothing...

Any action by Congress to call the kenyan to account requires the co-operation or the Speaker of the House i.e. this Boehner creature. Were I a citizen of another country I could snicker just a bit or even laugh outright. Boehner would lose access to the Georgetown Cocktail parties, the single most important perquisite of leadership, were he to do that.

Benghazi will never mean a thing to about 47%

When the money runs out over Bronco’s economic plan that is so misguided that if any middle income housewife used the same philosophy in her planning, she would be labeled insane, then they will see.

The Republicans in the house and senate, if they don’t get out of the way they’ll get blamed and that is the trouble ahead.

Sadly, that is exactly what's happening. The press isn't doing its job.

Benghazi will have zero impact on 0bama and his administration.

What WILL take him down, though, will be the inevitable and imminent financial collapse.

Absolutely. The corrupt MSM have been circling the wagons around Obama on F&F and Benghazi. They learned their lesson on Bill Clinton and they are even MORE protective.

The passage of Obamacare have massive public outcry was a big first clue that Democrats don't care. The MSM covers them, and the recent election shows there were no consequences for Obama himself.

Obama and Democrats have little to fear. What is to stop Obama and Democrats from doing even more evil? The media? After F&F and Benghazi you can see that there is basically no more accountability.

With a corrupt MSM eager to cover up any government action, however evil, I fear we are in for some very dark and sinister days ahead.

The press isn't doing its job.

I keep seeing the statement "maybe the press will finally do its job". What folks don't seem to realize is that the description of that job has changed. It is no longer to ferret out the truth and keep Americans informed - that is what Herridge/Rubin are doing on FOX with their outstanding Benghazi reporting. No, the rest of the so-called media is merely an advertising/public relations agency for Obama, to make him look good, to be adoring and fawning, to smooth over and cover up what should be abhorrent and disgusting. They need to be dismissed as 'media' and treated for what they are .... how, exactly, we do this in a meaningful way, I'm not sure.

Ah, are you talking about FDR? He invaded a dozen or more countries that had nothing to do with the Pearl Harbor attack.

Stupid comment.

Thanks for posting Victor Davis Hanson on Free Republic -- he used to be a regular feature, and I've missed his articles lately.

If there is any kind of ping list for Hanson, please put me on it.

The Press is, indeed, doing its job. Their job is to survive. They are a bunch of private businesses that are run for immediate gain and that gain now comes more surely through political machinations than through private market entrepreneurship. It is the result of economic calculation. The press is dead if it is a neutral just-the-facts publisher because of the Net etc. They hang on with their alliance with government. Of course, soon they will be an owned part of government but the presstitutes believe they will be the secure and prosperous propaganda arm of the government. They crave to attain the status of Pravda and Tass in their heyday.

I agree. When I have heard why people went into Journalism, it was always because "they wanted to make a difference in the world." Well, they are. They, as I see it, are willing tools to bring down what they have been taught is an unfair society. Now, if they had said they wanted to use their investigatory and writing skills to bring the facts to the people, I might have some respect for them. Like you, have no idea how we get around such a vast propaganda network.
