(Reuters) - Superstorm Sandy drove a surge in new claims for U.S. jobless benefits last week and weighed on factory activity in November, providing early signs of how heavily the storm could hit the U.S. economy in the fourth quarter.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 78,000 to a seasonally adjusted 439,000, the highest level since April 2011, the Labor Department said on Thursday.
It was the biggest one-week jump since the spike caused by Hurricane Katrina in September 2005.

Charging the same rates for Local Mail and Air Mail is stupid.
or Bush
So, no one is looking at the numbers from NJ? Those don’t reflect Sandy’s effects so it seems. Wait until next week!
Sandy due to global warming which is Bush’s fault.
wow... me thinks that “super storm” will be the cause of a ruined economy for the next 4 years, that and Bush of course.
Amazing at the convoluted reaches the administration and it's willing press go to, to describe the One's complete ineptitude. SIGH.
Hurricane Sandy was nearly four weeks ago, yet somehow is the cause for last week’s upsurge in UE claims, eh? And we’re expected to believe that tripe?
Since the election:

So Sandy caused claims to jump in PA and OH which were the two states reporting the biggest increases in claims?
Sandy had nothing to do with this increase. The fairytale numbers reported before the election are the true reason of this huge jump.
Now that the election is over, why waste time cooking the books?
I couldn’t find the name of the “factory” in the article. You would think it woud be mentioned since it lost 78,000 jobs.
This year we are expected to believe it.
Next year we will be required to believe it.
Who knew that Hurricane Sandy hit Ohio? or non-coastal Pennsylvania?
They faked all the economic stats before the election. Now the real stats are coming out.
Notice that this tyrannical government kept ALL of the fake economic stats precisely where they needed so that the media could claim the economy was improving. The government committed fraud with this and also the democrats perpetrated massive voter fraud to get the evil communist Obama elected. how much more will we take?
This type of reporting reminds me of Pravda in the old and not so old days. The Tribune editors must be stupid or ignorant or fellow travelers or all three.
Yep, the superstorm that hit us on November 6th!
We got a dusting of wet snow in SW Ohio - didn’t affect unemployment.
