(Scroll down for video) Nearly 100 Jewish headstones in one Connecticut cemetery were found smashed last month, according to police reports.
Three teenagers were arrested over the weekend for the alleged destruction of 90 to 95 headstones in a Jewish cemetery in Connecticut, causing about $20,000 in damages.
Hartford Police began investigating the case in mid-October, and only recently received a notice that three teenagers who live in the neighborhood were responsible for the crime.

What IS the fascination for desecrating tombstones and cemeteries? Kids do it and have done it all the time. I wonder if it’s no some subconscious fear of death, and this is a way of confronting that fear?
I suspect it was originally looked at as a ‘hate crime’ because it was a Jewish cemetery, but then it turned out the the kids just were wreaking havoc without the first thought as to the nature or religion of the cemetery. Could well be that the kids themselves are Jewish, it’s all in a Jewish neighborhood and it was just THERE.
Probably youths of color, hence impossible to be Nazi or commit hate crimes.
Possibly just vicious hatefulness in general rather than anti-Semitism.
Hartford is about 40% Hispanic, 40% black. The remaining white population is probably on the elderly side.
Lots of Jewish cemeteries in places where Jews no longer live in any great numbers - Newark comes to mind.
Their parents should pay for new gravemarkers to replace all the ones they broke and the kids should clean up the entire cemetery once a week for a year. They they should watch every movie or film clip ever made about the Holocaust and the history of the Jews, read every book ever written about it and then write a 25,000 word report which they should read aloud in their class.
It’s past time to hold kids and their parents responsible.
You are maiking a few assumptions:
1. that perps can read and write.
2. that they attend school
3. that they have parents
4. that they would understand or care if forced to read about Holocaust- as they obviously do not care about the rights of others

This was not a prank. It was malicious anti-semitic vandalism and should be treated as an act of violence, not stupidity.
I remember when Hartford and Bridgeport were safe places to visit and live. Not anymore.
Time to stop making excuses for violence.

Wow. I’m impressed with the sleuthing. I was going to say it was probably as suggested in comment #5 but that changes things. Now I think more likely what I would call the “Holder rule”: blacks cannot be charged for hate crimes.

The change from 2 to 16 whites in the 4 tracts surrounding the cemetery only changes my conclusions from "certainly not white" to "extremely unlikely to be white" for the following reason.
The 4 Census tracts surrounding the cemetery (5015, 5011, 5012 and 501) list a combined estimated population of 8,500 people. What's the odds of members - whatever their age - of a minority of 16 out of 8,500 would call attention to themselves in such open declarations of their toughness or badness? Very, very unlikely!

Also, where is the outrage from the Jewish community. It’s a little harder to care about this if they don’t care about it. Or is their outrage just not being reported?
I agree with the other comments - 2 or 16 is not statistically important. Both are just about equally not the unlikely source of these vandals.
It was considered a hate crime until they discovered that the perps were members of a group that is considered by the DOJ as incapable of hate.
Good points and there is a #5 and that would be the judge.
We have local JP’s in our part of Texas, all of whom are very Conservative Republicans. Their various dockets are filled to the brim with cases involving teenagers and, lately, a lot of pre-teens. They pride themselves on handing down and enforcing some very creative consequences. Seriously doubt if they have the same caliber of judges in Connecticut.
Most likely, given the ethnic makeup of this area, these were ‘Amish’ boys that would look just Obama’s sons.
Of course, they nor their families will pay for the damage, as they are ‘judgement-proof’. They are probably welfare scum and thus cannot pay.
In a perfect world, this money should be deducted from their family’s welfare check until their share of the damage was paid. That would be a good lesson they would not soon forget.
There is something you can do to put a problem in the lives of the judgement proof. Even if you know that you will never get paid, here is a way to get revenge on these vermin. I did this once.
Get the highest quote for damage you can find.
Go to small claims court for an instant judgement (they won’t even bother to show up).
Give them the money! That is, give them the debt as earnings and file a W-2 for them. The IRS and welfare office will cut their benefits and they will be in trouble for not reporting income.
Make the grifters pay!
