I find that telling them “I hope you are right and I am wrong” very calmly also shuts them up. It seems to give them an uneasy feeling. ;^)
Between this IPad and the Browns ahead of the Cowboys, corrections are difficult (especially if you have thick fingers that lacks a stylus, lol)
I don’t react that strongly anymore because I remember when I was a dumb 27 year old who thought socialism sounded great and Bill Clinton was way cool with his saxophone. I grew up. Some of them may too. But the best thing I can do to help them is to provide an example of rational adulthood. I’ve had a lot of people stare at me with narrowed eyes for a minute and say “How can you be a Republican? You’re so intelligent and nice.” I say “Perhaps you’ve been misled as to what a Republican is.” I figure I’m planting a seed.

I just interviewed someone for a job in our office. She mentioned that her son just graduated from Occidental, The same college Obama attended. She lit up when she said the name Obama. Guess who won’t be working in our office.
These friends go back 40 years, and believe it or not they were Reagan Democrats once and explained it to me (now they deny it: one of them has Convenient Memory Syndrome), but then Beastwoman and Slick jerked the government-check chain (one of them was working contract for Fedgov at the time), putting them in danger of losing their house, and ever since they've been wild-eyed Republican-haters. Republicans threatened them with destitution and homelessness -- it was in all the newspapers (they read the Atlanta Urinal-Constipation), It's a Fact!! So when I tell them what really happened, it's all just a bunch of lies that I've sponged off that lying, malevolent Rush Limbaugh. And it's All Bush's Fault.
So that part of the relationship -- acknowledging their reality -- has become pretty rocky, and one of them likes to play Set a Hook and Twist It to boot. But they're old, old friends and mean well otherwise.
At least they've figured out that Cynthia Tucker, the newspaper's editor, is a black racist. That's something.
