If he was surrounded by three armed men intent on robbery, the gun owner was fully justified in going for kill shots.

The reporter needs more education. My guess is the intended victim was probably shooting from the hip as fast as possible, not being merciful. Or maybe he though things would still work out with the young lady if he didn't kill any of her nice friends.

If he was going to shoot from the hip, he should have had a laser sight on his pistol. That way he could be assured of hitting center mass.
