USS Gunston Hall (LSD-44) is a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship of the United States Navy. She was the second Navy ship to be named for Gunston Hall, the Mason Neck, Virginia estate of George Mason, one of Virginia’s outstanding Revolutionary figures, and “Father of the Bill of Rights”.

So why was the first ship named that? Of course since the the 1960s or so, there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to how the navy names its ships. In the old days battleships for states, crusiers for cities, destroyers for seamen killed in action. Now nothing to include naming a ship for a communist union agitator. and evem living folks.
