Why Conservatives Should Cheer Up
Townhall.com ^ | November 20, 2012 | Bill Murchison

"Barack Obama won because he recognized a new America." Or maybe an America more fluid, more insubstantial than post-election wisdom is ready to grant. You can't always tell about "new" -- a truth the human race rarely acknowledges.

We'll see whether James Carville's and Stan Greenberg's words from a Democracy Corps survey stand up better than the consensus of November 1965, following the Lyndon Johnson-led slaughter of almost every Republican downwind from Barry Goldwater. Johnson, father of the Great Society, was all but run out of Washington on a rail after mucking up the Vietnam War.

Meanwhile, as everyone these days seems to know, the unstoppable alliance of unmarried women, young people, Hispanics and Blacks is set to remake America: the minute Americans agree on what a remade America ought to look like.

"There's many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip" is the indicated adage for now, notwithstanding that polls such as Carville's and Greenberg's seem to confirm the birth of a new alliance committed to wealth redistribution and big government.

The so-called "Rising American Electorate" appears to hanker for, among other things, larger investments in education, "protection" of Social Security and Medicare and fairness for women. Thomas B. Edsall, in the New York Times, calls attention to a Pew Research Center poll showing rising support for socialism as the remedy for capitalism.

Yes, yes, fine. Let's see how it all works out. To put it another way: Let's see what works out in practice and not just post-campaign rhetoric. The instant temptation, from the conservative side, is to go all weepy at such news. I would counsel resistance to such temptation: this, for a couple of reasons.

--The alliance of "Rising American Electorate" members is not necessarily based on congruence of interests. The young may be the shakiest element of the alliance for economic reasons. When you're earning $20,000 a year -- or living at home -- it may seem well to call for expropriation of the bloated plutocrats. The genius of America, nonetheless, has always been the elevation of the low-income earner to the higher tax brackets. To redistribute widely would be to overthrow the American premise of entitlement to the fruits of one's work and enterprise. Are we there yet? I see no persuasive evidence.

--Then what's all these nonsense about hiring another 100,000 teachers? Meaning, another 100,000 members of the teachers unions, whose troops have carried American public schools to such celestial heights? "Protect" Social Security and Medicare? Without affecting economies as to cost and eligibility? That should do a lot of good. And without -- gulp! -- burdening taxpayers with slimmer means than the two left-wing Georges -- Soros and Clooney?

Shall we try socialism? What a great idea -- Cuba, North Korea and Venezuela as our models and pole stars! Ought to be an effective formula for weight loss.

A continuing problem with left-wingery -- a problem not grasped by some of the analysts -- is that it doesn't work. Socialists, as Maggie Thatcher astutely observed, always run out of other people's money. They can't replace it of course with their own. Socialism isn't about creating wealth; it's about grabbing someone else's.

Republicans need to cheer up. It always hurts to lose a vital election: for instance, the one immediately past. And yet to victors sometimes belongs something more depressing than spoils; namely, the obligation to make good on lame, idiotic promises. Might we hold the national obituaries pending proof that the 2012 outcome was the will of the gods?

In the short run, what about a little indignant and forceful resistance, according to the American tradition, as exemplified 70 years ago by "Uncle Joe" Stilwell while the Allies reeled from a near knock-out by the Japanese? "I claim we got a hell of a beating," Joe told the press. "We got run out of Burma and it is humiliating as hell. I think we ought to find out what caused it, go back and retake it." And you know what? We did just that.

that things will get so bad in the next two years that we will sweep the senate and the house in 2014, and win the oval office back in 2016.

And which "we" will that be? The TEA Party "we" or the Republican Party "we"?

The only thing that cheers me up at all is the fact that obammy’s re-election means he can still be impeached. (however unlikely that might be)

Hmmm...good question. I look for a rerun of 2010, with the Tea Party arm of the GOP making huge inroads. At least that’s what I hope for...otherwise, what difference does it make?

It will lead to a horrendous recession.

And they will blame it on 50 years of Republican policies of tax cuts and deregulation.

So figuring out how to counter that lie is the key.

Historic examples of socialism on a grand scale show it to be not a system evolved beyond capitalism but a modern return to feudalism. Fortunately, young people get older, unmarried women get married and more Blacks and Latinos find upward mobility. The only permanence is change. The political pendulum eventually swings back our way.

“A continuing problem with left-wingery — a problem not grasped by some of the analysts — is that it doesn’t work... Socialism isn’t about creating wealth; it’s about grabbing someone else’s.”

Your last sentence is the money statement. And the problem is, for the new majority, grabbing someone else's wealth is the only part that counts. Whether socialism works for the country is immaterial.

Those two things will allow an attempt at socialism, and an acceptance of failure.

...And the gross insanity of trying it again... and again... and again, regardless of proven failure.

The first big test will be California. 400,000 people are supposed to be coming off unemployment on January 1, 2013. There’s already talk about keeping their unemployment going. Socialism if they keep it going. Fun to watch, if they don’t.
If you have a business in California, and you supply the state, start raising your bids. Tell your competitors you’re raising your bids. What’s good for the goose is good for Jerry Brown.

I thought he was going to go in a different direction: that things will get so bad in the next two years that we will sweep the senate and the house in 2014, and win the oval office back in 2016. That’s my prediction...

The population as a whole is too self-interested to let that happen. The typically American demand for everything NOW has linked with the ever-growing entitlement mentality. "Americans" want government freebies and they want them now. They're only going to vote for those candidates who will ladle those freebies out to them.

to the poster who mentioned impeachment,

Impeachment is impossible without the press..

it happened to Nixon largely due to the Washington Post, and then all newspapers and television picked it up.

we have such a story now, and it is largely being ignored by them.

Will the blacks and Hispanics really come out and support a lily white Hillary Clinton...

Nope - the Dems are now bound to putting forth a black (or very dark Hispanic) candidate for the foreseeable future.

And they will...

I HOPE SO! Going to do my part in the next few weeks to get some info on what can be done ground game wise to get to that result!!

We don’t need to impeach Obama to get rid of him. We just start to tie the Democrats to Obama’s debacles and they’ll get rid of him.

Nope - the Dems are now bound to putting forth a black (or very dark Hispanic) candidate for the foreseeable future.

The irony it is White Liberals (especially White Male Liberals) that are marginalized first.

Blacks & Hispanics are the most racist groups out there. They only vote for their own and they surely are not going to let White Liberals rule them. Look at Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles or any big city. There will never be a White mayor again. In many cases there isn't a single White on the city council or at the head of any Department. Soon we will be saying that about whole states. Once a Democrat seat goes black, it don't go back.

And while Black & Hispanics are Liberals when it comes to getting goodies from YT, they don't care about things that White Liberals care about like Women, gay and Animal Rights (How many blacks are on the Sea Shepard?).

Worse, these single white women better enjoy their free birth control now, because there is no way 20-40 years from now, Blacks & Hispanics are going to be happy paying Social Security for all these Childless White Liberal Females

The bad news for us is that it probably means Moochelle will be running in 2016

Socialists, as Maggie Thatcher astutely observed, always run out of other people’s money

Problem as I see it is that this country is so intrinsically wealthy that it will take a LOOOOOOOONG time for the Socialists to expropriate everything and deplete it. In the USSR flat-out Communism eeked out a 70 year run in a country that was far poorer in terms of resources to expropriate. Some clever Socialists able to keep the goose just barely alive could milk this for a couple of hundred years until the collapse.

Certainly I get the feeling that I'm stuck with Social Democracy for the rest of my natural lifetime.

“We have now entered the era of the completely ignorant voter.”

Worse than that.

It’s the era of institutionalized jealousy, hatred, vengeance, incivility based on profiling and the camel’s nose of incipient authoritarianism poking it’s nose into the tent, with impunity.

IMHO

.

.

We can not wait for 2014 and 2016 to regroup and figure out new strategies. By then it will be too late. The Marxist/Muslim usurper will have completed his planned distruction of America.
That’s what people fail to understand.

Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.

Polls indicated that Romney was going to win the election. The economy is close to Great Depression era conditions, and unemployment is almost as high as when Obama entered office. Economic conditions became so dire after Obama took office it prompted the rise of an entire new movement, the Tea Party.
Presidents rarely win reelection when the economy is in the tank.
So how did Romney lose a race that numerous reputable polls and pundits predicted would be an easy win, based on historical patterns?
Massive voter fraud.

There are massive reports of criminal activity
(not mischief, not shenanigans, as many term the fraud- but CRIMINAL ACTIVITY) going on all over the U.S during the presidential election.
Reports of machines changing votes from Romney to Obama, eyewitness reports of Republican poll watchers who observed busloads of non-English speaking Somalians in Ohio being instructed to vote Obama- the list is endless.
http://www.ObamaVoterFraud.com/

Romney lost because of this, not any other reason.
Nobody could have won against the fraud planned and perpetrated by the Obama Machine.

The evidence is overwhelming!

Thanks for this...until I saw your post, I figured that the 365,000 or so votes he won Ohio, VA and FL by were too much for them to have gotten by fraud. Now I guess I’m not so sure.
