Despite getting an earful from some critics and employees over its plan to open stores on Thanksgiving evening this year, Target Corp. said it will press ahead with the plan.
KSTP reports that a Target retail worker on Monday delivered a petition with more than 350,000 signatures asking the retailer to reverse its decision to open at 9 p.m. Thanksgiving this year.

Its bad enough when Christmas decorations go up in stores the day after Halloween, much more that stores open at midnight on the Friday after Thanksgiving. May God save us from ourselves...
I refuse to shop on any holiday. Period. I won't shop on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter. I also refuse to shop on Sunday. If enough of us did the same retailers would think twice about forcing their employees to work holidays.
The Home Depot had Christmas merchandise set up two weeks before Halloween. Got their fresh cut Christmas trees last week...
They can all quit and Obama will take care of them with our money.
It’s sad. It’s not just the one percenters’ making all that money. They get to enjoy their holidays while the peons get to work and make them even more money. It’s like they want the employees to form their own Boxers’ Day with whatever time off they can find. People feel like victims and guess who they turn to?
If people wouldn’t shop there on Thanksgiving, the stores wouldn’t be open. Blame the greedy Americans who would rather shop ‘til they drop instead of spending the day to thank God Almighty for His provision.

Personally I think Target is being extremely foolish.
Obama just won. He did so with tons of union help. He now OWES them bigtime.
The unionization of Walmart is now Job #1 and this “open on Thanksgiving” issue has opened the door to the chaos. If I ran a retail chain I’d be trying to keep my head down and stay off the Obama/AFL-CIO radar.
Is a few more hours of selling really worth inviting that sort of chaos into your organization?
Not to mention it’s one of the few issues where most of Middle America will actually side with the union hacks.
If you work in retail, you should know beforehand what happens during the Christmas season. This is their time to make a profit for the year.
They only open to make money, if no one shops they will close the doors, unfortunately many shop.
I am one American who has freaking HAD IT with the commercialization of our religious days of observance.
My kids (11 and 16)are starting to understand its all a bunch of commercial crap as well.

Retail workers could always choose a different career path, such as military(oops they’re working too) fire department, police, medical, utility company... There are more people working those holidays than the ones who make the bulk of their yearly profit during the six or so weeks that retail does.
I used to work for Target when I was in high school.
The level of rudeness from shoppers made me hate the holiday for ten years, until I happened on the Christmas mass at the Vatican on tv. Now I don’t patronize department stores anymore and actually like Christmas again.
These people and these stores short-sighted greed are made for each other.
I’ll be at Target on Thanksgiving. If I want to shop, and I do, they provide me with the opportunity.

It’s going to be one empty store.
The thing I like about the doorbuster obsession moving openings earlier and earlier is that it make Friday proper an actually safe time to shop. Use to be Black Friday was crazy all day, anyplace with a cash register was crazy. Then doorbusters started, I’ve actually found half empty parking lots by lunch time. Now that Black Friday is moving to Thursday night the whole actual Friday might be safe.
And as for all the people griping about places being open, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. Lots of places are open Thanksgiving. Many restaurants, most convenience stores, most movie theaters. Not everybody is into the family gathering thing, not everybody has family to gather with, some people are mostly thankful for peace and quiet.
Blue Laws are going away, when I was a kid the only thing that was open on Sundays were convenience stores.
Target is taking advantage of the restrictions lifting. In this economy it could come down to ‘who gets the first dollar’ of spending...There may not be any dollars to follow the first rush...there will definitely be less of them.
I was 29 years old before I got a job that guaranteed me Thanksgiving Day off. My family would celebrate Thanksgiving on the day that we could get together...it doesn’t have to be the 4th Thursday of November.

You can’t watch parades, heartwarming traditional movies or football on TV or listen to how bad traffic is on the radio without people being at their jobs making sure you can watch/listen. You can’t have heartwarming family reunions involving people who come in at the last minute without pilots, stewardesses, air traffic controllers, bus drivers, train engineers, etc. being on the job.
Lots of people work on Thanksgiving...and Christmas...and Easter. It’s great if you don’t have to work, but a lot of people do, and we (including me when I was younger) survive.
Target's a retail business and with such a stagnant economy and Walmart deciding to start earlier Thanksgiving night, there's little choice. They have to survive. Despite this petition, their workers wouldn't be thankful to lose their jobs and their suppliers wouldn't be thankful for the lack of sales either.
