NEWARK A behind-the-scenes political maneuver by Newark Mayor Cory Booker to fill a vacant council seat with his choice led to a near-riot in city hall tonight, with dozens of residents rushing the council stage and police responding with pepper-spray.
After weeks of jockeying for Rep. Donald Paynes successor, Booker made an unprecedented personal appearance to cast the deciding vote with his council allies for Shanique Davis Speight, a longtime ally of power broker Stephen Adubato, over the angry objections of residents.
"In the absence of a quorum, I have an obligation to sit in," Booker said, though he was barely audible over the din.
The packed city council chamber was gearing up for a showdown over the appointment as well known figures including former Mayor Sharpe James, Amiri and Amina Baraka, former Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins and former Council President Donald Bradley came to back their choices.

did Booker get the last food stamp?
What a story, looks like Newark is reaching new lows in thuggery. If you can believe that. The story is worth the read.
Here’s another interesting clip from the story:
“But when Speight was escorted by police to be sworn in, a group of residents, led by SEIU Local 617 President Rahaman Muhammad, stormed the dais and appeared to lunge toward Speight and her grade-school-age son.”
NJ needs a fixin’, to say the least.
If the sock puppet Obambi had children, they’d look like them.
Now that’s some good stuff right there. Grifting freeloaders vs other grifting freeloaders.....IN A CAGE!!! They need to put this shizzle on Pay-per-View.
There was a lot of Graft up for grabs and it might be that the victor Shaniqua is playing Hide The Salami with the mayor. Welcome to Newark. If there is a bright spot in America, Newark is the farthest place from it.
Carpet bombing comes to mind.
Booker will beat Christie like a drum if he runs against him for governor, no matter how much Christie grovels at Obama’s feet.
Newark ain't necessarily NJ, but it plus Camden and Trenton seem to generate most of the news.
Booker certainly looks like a New Left minor league guy headin’ for the big leagues.
It does seem hard to fathom the level of stupidity, but the Repubs maybe would consider YAR (yet another RINO) like Christie, which would of course be another Charlie Brown football election.
He campaigned a lot all over the country to help out other R’s, of course, but still I doubt he’d even do as well as Romney. It’s like the Repubs don’t realize since they’re backing off on everything they’re becoming a generic party with no base.
Well, unless you count the base that hates Democrats, considers themselves Republican, always complains about the government, but get all their news off mainstream TV, don’t know who their Congressman is and haven’t voted in decades. They’ve definitely won that base.
That’s why Christie may turn Rat, to head him off.
LOL, I like that, not Fat Cat, FatRat.
“The mobs of great cities add just so much to the support of pure government, as sores do to the strength of the human body. It is the manners and spirit of a people which preserve a republic in vigor. A degeneracy in these is a canker which soon eats to the heart of its laws and constitution”.
Thomas Jefferson
Bullseye, swamp !
LOL. I rather poor and sane than the king of graft in that sh*thole.
Christie has all the makings of a demonRAT, except he's never been accused of having an affair.
He is such a fat slob, getting a girl friend may be a problem, but he could hang out at truck stop mens rooms and give some lewinskys to vagrants, hitch hikers and dumpster divers.
That fat nasty pig could join the demonRATs and I'd never miss him.
Tribal America in action. This is the type of conduct Zero understands thought he can’t understand how to pronounce the name of a world renowned human rights activists.
