Lawmaker's sights set on making Texas an open-carry state for handguns

The lunchtime rush had subsided, and three idle sandwich shop employees were speculating about what they would do if a guy dressed in T-shirt and jeans walked through the door with a holstered Colt .45 strapped to his hip.

“I would think it’s a plainclothes police officer,” said Eric Bejarano.

“I would be suspicious that he had come to rob us,” said Candice Guard.

“I would call the cops to come check him out,” said Matthew Guard, Candice’s husband.

If a Texas lawmaker has his way, strangers wearing six-shooters may become a common sight across the state.

The Legislature passed a law in 1995 allowing Texans to carry handguns concealed under coats, in purses, or in glove compartments. But it’s still against the law to carry pistols where people can see them.

Rep. George Lavender, a Texarkana Republican, wants to change that. When the Legislature convenes in January, he says, he will push for an “open carry” law. His plan is to give the more than 500,000 Texans who hold concealed-weapon licenses the option of carrying holstered pistols out in the open.

Lavender said he finds it ironic that freedom-loving Texas is one of just six states not to allow some form of open carry. The others are Illinois, New York, Arkansas, South Carolina and Florida. An open-carry law went into effect in Oklahoma on Nov. 1.

Most people are surprised when they find that Texas bans open carry.

Not as suprised as I was when I found out that TX will deny issuing a CCW if you have defaulted on a student loan.

Impeach the kenyan or secession.

I’m going to be schooling my new freshman pubbie in the state House about not only backing pro gun legislation but voting for a conservative to be Speaker.
Joe Strauss has GOT TO GO!!
Like yesterday!
He is the one who consistently keeps all our good bills from evr coming to a vote.
I’m sick of it!
If our new guy doesn’t come through I might have to seriously consider running.
I honestly hate the thought, but we really need a genuine trouble maker in Austin who will ring the bell about how these guys repeatedly have their cake and eat it too.
They co sponsor good bills but simultaneously vote for Joe Strauss to be Speaker.
That way they can reassure the university presidents behind closed doors that campus carry won’t come up for a vote, and also tell their constituents that they supported the legislation.
I’m damned tired of it and it just gets more offensive to me every two years when they do it.
This year we need to push for optional open carry and/or Constitutional carry.
Also need to repeal as many carry restrictions as possible.
We can win the intellectual argument with truth and logic.
Our adversaries are small minded nanny staters and emotional decision makers.
Concealed carry is fine and I support it. Heck I will probably continue it even if open carry is legalized.
But that’s not the point. Our society has become rude and ugly. That can change if good people exercise their rights.
I can’t ever remember being at a gun show or any similar event where people act rude and disrespectful.
It is true that an armed society is a polite society.

There’s a local kid in his early 20s around here that looks like he just stepped out of a Mad Max movie (Mohawk, tattoos, piercings) and carries openly. I met him at a tea party express stop and he said that police gave him some hassles at first but once they got to know him they leave him alone.

As he says, “Who better to teach the police than someone who would attract their attention in the first place”.

VA is an open carry state, and you RARELY see someone open carry.

I did find it strange that open carry was not legal in TX.

The article quoted a police officer as saying:
“Open carry introduces something unknown to law enforcement, a whole new legitimate question: 911 is called, an officer arrives and there is a gun. What do you do with that gun?”

Hey, at least now you can SEE the gun and who has it!

I live in an open carry state. Last guy I saw open carrying was in the produce aisle... He obviously wasn’t there to rob the place, he was checking out the lettuce... A lot of these anti gun types are the exact same people telling us to accept people as they are, celebrate diversity, look at the good in people, find common ground.. Etc etc. But when confronted with someone truly different, they assume the worst, fear them, and want to call the cops... Hey lib lurkers, there is a word I’m thinking of, applies to most allof you, starts with an h...

Does anyone know when and why Texas banned open carry? The article fails to include the relevant facts.

I’m with you - I’d love to be able to strap my vintage (manufactured in the Springfield Armory in 1914) 1911 .45 on my hip. Or maybe even my Ruger .357 stainless. As it is, my pocket pieces will have to do.

I’ll probably keep my KelTec .32 just as a conversation piece.

There's no way that's constitutional under Heller.

I have an old Browning Belgique .32 that’s a little loose but still shoots reliably. Still has the value of propelling a bit of lead at speed...

When I was a teenager in the 80s, we openly carried shotguns and rifles right down main street in my little Michigan town. We even carried them in the grocery store if we were on foot or on our bikes.

It wasn’t something that people really gave a second thought to.

My guess would be back in the reconstruction days (after the end of the civil war).

Think it'll ever happen? Texas is growing more government-dependent with each passing day, and Austin is full-on Moonbat Containment Zone. They better get it done now while they still have the votes.
