West Virginia Republican Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito will announce Monday morning that she is running in 2014 for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Democrat Jay Rockefeller.
Capito has long considered a run for the Senate, and passed on the most recent opportunity following the death of long-time Senator Robert Byrd. She's expected to say, among other things, that the timing is now right for her run.
The announcement sets up a potential race between two West Virginia political heavyweights.

She’s apparently good on illegal immigration, which is something of a litmus test for me.
You’re right, she’s not perfect, but she’d be a good candidate and a good chance at a Senate pickup.
Or more correctly, John D. Rockefeller IV.
Shes apparently good on illegal immigration, which is something of a litmus test for me.

Good start for me too. As a real, legal immigrant, I will not vote for, nor support, any Amnesty Liberal.
National Security begins at the Border...so anyone strong against Illegal Aliens will be good on Natl Security, too
You’re so right about Rubio, too!
On a scale of 1 (Olympia Snowe) to 10 (Rand Paul) I would rate her about a 7.
I'll definitely support her. Hopefully the WV GOP has seen the last of serial loser John Raese.
Hi WVNight. I’m one of those who are waiting too. I’m really happy that Shelley is running. I think she can take it. Greetings to you and yours (a fellow WVirginian).
We will have to really work for her and support her as much as we can with $$$$. I’m really retiring for the second time in July. I’m thinking of asking her for a job. Maybe head up her campaign in Mason Co.
I like the early start. Go go go go go go go go go go go.
Senator Tax shelter hypocrite may retire especially if his liege lord gets even more unpopular.
The Club for Growth has come out with not undeserved haterade for Capito.
She’s no great conservative, pro-choice (or at least pro-choiceish) and a pork establishment type.
If money bags does not retire he will be hard to dislodge and she’s the most popular Republican in the state if only cause she’s Arch Moore’s daughter.
In any case she’s isn’t gonna lose a primary if it’s against some random nobody who says he’s tea party, the WV GOP will be behind her.
If she were to have a real challenger who could both beat her and win in November that would be one thing, but I think that is unlikely.
We have a lot of Senate seats to gain. The smart thing may be to accept her as the candidate and pick other battles.
If there was a more conservative Republican in WV with the profile to beat Capito in a statewide primary and then win a (likely open-seat) U.S. Senate election, I would probably support him or her, but there isn’t, so I won’t. WV Republicans have almost no bench. The way to build a bench is to elect a young conservative to Capito’s House seat, to elect someone to Rahall’s seat, to keep gaining state legislative seats and state offices.
The fact that Capito isn’t a CFG type does not trouble me much, since she’s running in populist WV, where they like some pork with every meal. I am far more concerned with her “pro-choice” voting record on abortion, something with which her Democrat opponent likely will beat her over the head. I do not believe that Jay Rockefeller will run for reelection—not raising money and selling out the state’s coal industry is not the sign of a man working to defend his seat—and the Democrat candidate probably will be some good ol’ boy who will claim to be 100% pro-life and pro-gun and drink brewed coal insteal of coffee in the morning. The guy (and it will be a man) will appear in TV commercials cradling a baby and holding the Bible in his other hand, and he will swear to protect innocent human life like he will good-paying coal jobs, unlike that Washington socialite Capito with her baby-killing record and shady business interests. Capito better be ready for the barrage: her opponent will run so far to the right on social issues that it will make Manchin’s campaign seem like Jerrold Nadler’s.
I agree with your analysis except that ....some good ol boy who will claim to be.... in this state it is absolutely possible for a candidate to really be pro-life, pro-gun, pro-coal, pro-Bible and also really be pro-union, pro-trial lawyer and pro-government cheese.
Hundreds of thousands of WV'ers have this exact mix of views and don't in any way think they are contradictory.
According to the WV Right to Life via e-mail, they will back Shelley Capito.
Not from WV, but I am well aware that there are many genuine socially conservative, economically populist/liberal voters and public officials in WV (heck, they may be a majority). My remark about Capito’s opponent “claiming to be” those things is due to the fact that, oftentimes, Democrat “Blue Dogs” are “Blue Frauds” whose deeds don’t match their rhetoric. Case in point: Joe Manchin claims to be pro-life, but voted against repealing Obamacare, voted against cutting off funding for Planned Parenthood, and voted against blocking funding for Obamacare: http://nrlc.capwiz.com/bio/id/46655
I think 2014 can be another GOP wave election like 2010. The off-year election following a second term re-election of a private usually leads to huge losses of the party in power. I’d like to see that trend magnified to the maximum degree.
