Well, according to your way of thinking, we should let everyone out of prison who attempted to kill someone but didn’t. After all, no one was killed, right? What about armed bank robbers who hold up banks? Just let them walk since, after all, no one was shot and there was no property damage?
I had a childhood friend killed by a drunk driver. He was push starting a car and a drunk driver, with his headlights off, was being pursued by police and rammed my friend, cutting him in half.
He had EIGHT chances. He was BREAKING THE LAW. What else do you need. I really don’t care about anything else you have to say.
I WILL celebrate his being someone’s wife in prison.
It is interesting that you have to stretch my comments to include that ROBBERY is not property damage. You clearly didn’t even stop to THINK and instead typed a quick emotional response. Take a look at my next post and maybe you will think for a moment.
I finished my post to you that EVERY driver causing personal or property damage to others should be treated equally! All of them. Death is death. Of course that assumes that you have an interest in making the roads safer and not interested in propagating the revenue collection machine that is what is really behind the DUI madness.
“I WILL celebrate his being someones wife in prison.”
One more thing, do you realize that you are advocating RAPE as an appropriate punishment for someone that you admit DID NOT cause another person any physical or property damage? What other risky behaviour gives me the right to rape someone? If I see someone leave a bar and get into their car, can I yank her out and justifiably rape her?
Robbing people is victimizing them. So there was damage done when the bank was robbed.
Attempted murder involves actually TRYING to kill someone.
Actual intent is involved.
Those people rightfully need to be punished.
In your example, the drunk driver DID harm someone. Severe punishment was justified.
As a side note, however,if the police were involved in a high speed chase over a misdemeanor infraction, and that chase ended in harm to an innocent person, they should be in prison right along with the drunk driver.Their actions were just as irresponible. Not knowing the particulars in the case it would be hard to say. If the drunk was already driving at a high rate of speed and endangering lives, chasing him may have been justified. Otherwise following him at a distance and capturing him when he stopped would have been the appropriate thing to do.
