Trying to run a business is on a completely different moral plane from “playing” the lottery.

If you particpate in the lottery you are attempting to use the power of the state ( all lotteries are state monopolies) to transfer money from your fellow citizens to you. In that respect buying a lottery ticket is no different than voting for a democrat. You are trying to get something for nothing.

just having a little fun;)

staring a business at this time in MN, would be similar to playing the lotto, in that odds are, the State will win.

I love the lotto haters!..‘it’s a stupid tax people”! ...“it’s a tax on people who can’t do math”.. So pompous and self-righteous. For the past couple of years I have played Mega Millions and Powerball to the tune of $6 whole dollars a week (total)…big friggen deal! Yes, I have heard “smart” guys explain how much all that money would amount to if I just saved it and earned interest on it…really?

Look, for a few bucks a week I get to dream about wonderful things I could do for my family and friends that I simple couldn’t do otherwise. It’s fun to “be in it” even if the odds of winning are slim.
And about those odds,….How much time, money and effort do you spend on presidential elections? Hmmm…..and how many presidential “winners” have there been in the history of the country? Talk about “feeding the beast”! I guess we should teach our children that aspiring to be president is just stupid since the odds are extremely slim.

For me, it’s an easy bet and a happy day dream…even if I never win.

I suspect your life would be hell if you won. Unless you are a very strong personality willing to avoid almost every person and institution you knew prior to winning.

The demands would be overwhelming.

Yes, but the dream is more enjoyable when I know I have a chance however slim, of actually winning.

With my luck I have a great chance of winning. Of course 425 million other people would all have the same numbers.

I don’t know what the odds would be of 425 Million people hitting the same number combo! LOL It would have to be in the Billions to one..... Still to hit a Million Bucks for spending $2 wouldn’t be bad at all....in my state you would probably clear over $600 grand! I could do pretty well living a nice lifestyle for several years and have bills paid off with that kind of dough!!!! (Still not the $400 Million buy an island type money though....HAHAHA)

Shut down your life, as much as possible, and take off for a year. The parasites usually move on to other easy targets by then.

It doesn’t matter how many tickets are bought, as the odds are the same. You are drawing the odds from numbers drawn, not tickets sold.

The formula for determining the odds of winning, which I will use one of my national lotteries to explain it.

We have a lottery called 6/49. They draw 6 numbers and the numbers that can be drawn ranges from 1-49.

So, the math goes (49.48.47.46.45.44)/(1.2.3.4.5.6) to get about 1 in 13.98 million to win.

I got this information from a high school math textbook.

I wasn’t talking about the odds of winning the jackpot. I was guessing the odds of 435 million tickets being bought with the same numbers.... And one set of numbers out of 176 million or so combos. Out of say 200+ Million adults in the US over 18 say half buy lotto tickets.... Then roughly 100 Million people(or most ALL lottery players) would have to buy 4 lottery tickets each with the same numbers. I would guess the Odds of this situation happening would be High....

Well i think it is. Chicago is littered with toll roads and if you think that those funds arent just as wasted and misused as lottery proceeds youre dreaming.
As far as benifits go that is subjective and if a person entertains himself with a helluva long shot at being a millionaire or takes a toll road to make their commute easier, they are both supporting the beast as you say. To each their own.

My wife and I will buy a few quick-picks when the jackpots start getting really big. We did last Saturday and I'm sure I'll pick up a few tonight as well.

It's funny. She dreams about all the wonderful things she could do with all that money whereas I stress about the unbelievable burden that would come with trying to manage all that money. The way I see it, winning $425 million would make all my old problems go away but I'd have a whole bunch of new problems to replace them with.

Still, I think I'd be up for the challenge!

Exactly right....you buy a chance to dream. The actual Powerball jackpot odds are 1 in 175 million. Very extreme longshot odds. The odds go against you once your chances drop below an even money bet or 1 out 2. 1 in 175 million is astronomical so in essence you buy a chance to dream and that is it. As in the case of the last drawing all the tickets bought did not win the jackpot and hence it grows until enough tickets are bought to yield a winner or winners on the next one. No guarantee there will be a winner either but eventually there will.
