Reid: 'Fiscal cliff' deal must raise debt ceiling
By Alexander Bolton - 11/27/12 02:53 PM ET
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday any deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts must also raise the debt ceiling, and signaled that President Obama feels the same way.
Reid said Democrats would be foolish to agree to a year-end package that raises revenues and cuts spending only to face a Republican ultimatum on the debt ceiling weeks later.
We would be somewhat foolish to work out something on stopping us from going over the cliff and then a month or six weeks later Republicans pull the same game they did before and say, 'We're not going to do anything unless this happens, we're not going to agree to increasing the debt ceiling, Reid said.
I agree with the president, it has to be a package deal, he added.
this making a deal is just BULL ,Obama and the Dems will keep what they want and chuck the rest ,then blame the GOP ,same as the other deals
The media can’t seem to remember the fiscal cliff was a deal.
There is no "debt ceiling" other than that number beyond which China will not buy our debt, and nobody knows that number.
Can anyone point to even one ‘revenue enhancer’ in history that curbed Leftist spending as a result?
Then by God, why implement one more?
Stop the Leftist gravy train dead in it’s tracks. End of story.
If it ends up shutting down the federal government, excellent. And when we restart it, restart it with 10% as many federal employees.
Show ‘em you mean business... demand a formal bicameral censure of Elmo or no deal. (Leave out the harsh language...we don't wanna alienate the moderates.)
The liberals are the most deceptive lairs on the face of the planet. The Republicans could turn such statements against the democrats, but they will not do so.
Elmo probably has higher standards than members of Congress. Boehner was actually good until he was presented with those unflattering photos he did not want to be made public. The debt will be raised. The 20 trillion estimate is way to optimistic. It will be much higher.
They should let the ‘fiscal cliff’ go into effect. Then after 6 months of mandated austerity, we’ll see what parts of the government we can really do without.......
China stopped buying our debt several years ago.
In the recent era, there are two buyers of US debt:
1. Holders of Euros who know it is even more screwed than the USD.
2. The Federal Reserve.
Lazy Harry Reid is STILL trying to get out of doing work!
Suits me just fine. And as for the debt ceiling, just avoid it and there won’t be a need for it.
The Republicans should pass a balanced budget, and rip the Senate to shreds for not passing one.
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising Americas debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government cant pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Governments reckless fiscal policies. Increasing Americas debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."
That's the only thing Ubama ever said that I agree with, but now that foul, hypocritical piece of sh!+ is farting a different tune out of his mouth.
Screw it. Let's go over the cliff.
Heck - I've heard that the Repubs in the Congress have sent over a dozen budget proposals to the Senate and Dingy Harry wouldn't even let them come up for a vote. The Repubs already have the ammo but they refuse to shoot it.
Dimrats are signaling that they will do nothing to avoid this mess. They are willing to destroy our country.
The credit rating for the USA has been downgraded twice during obama’s reign so think of how big of a downgrade we will be hit with next year.
That will increase the interest on the debt that we cannot pay off in the first place.
When the poop hits the prop, the big problem won’t be our downgrade or our debt, it will be what obama does to our country in the aftermath.
Trebb, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to find out you’re exactly right on the subject of presented budgets.
As for the ammo, you’re definitely right there.
I’m tired of getting along. Time for some knock-down drag out fights.
From a July 18 National Review On Line article in To its great credit, the House of Representatives passed a budget plan on time, again this year. But the House cant move forward by itself. The Senate has to move, too. For three years the Democrats running the Senate have ignored common sense and ignored the law and have failed to pass a budget. Senator Kent Conrad, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, wanted to do the right thing, to bring a budget plan to the floor for debate and votes. But Reid said no.
The Dems don't want a budget because they would take heat for not sticking to it. They find it much easier to have a complicit Congress keep raising the debt ceiling with no real constraints on spending. Boehner has been talking tougher lately - I hope he sticks to his guns and actually starts putting facts out there. It doesn't matter that it will "hurt the Dems' feelings" and cause them to go on a vitriolic attack because they will attack regardless.
Trebb I like your post and think it makes good sense.
Thanks. You nailed it IMO.
And Republicans would be even more foolish to not have a signed/passed bill with spending cuts before they agree to even talk about anything else.
