I think the opposite it true. The more we turn the other cheek, and play the role of “above it all”, the worse they become. It’s like a bully, slapping someone who won’t sink to their level. When there is no apparent consequence, they become emboldened because it becomes way more fun.
Also, such tactics are useful. When some politician starts saying how Beck inflamed things, we can go to the record and see how they responded to “piss christ’, or to the Bush personal venom. It’s a great way to hold a mirror up to the vampire.
