Students Told to Disavow ‘American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality’

A political science professor at Butler University asks students to disregard their “American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status” when writing and speaking in the classroom – a practice the school’s arts and sciences dean defended as a way to negate students’ inherent prejudices.

The syllabus of the course at Butler, a small Midwestern liberal arts institution in Indianapolis, spells out that students should use “inclusive language” because it’s “a fundamental issue of social justice.”

“Language that is truly inclusive affirms sexuality, racial and ethnic backgrounds, stages of maturity, and degrees of limiting conditions,” the syllabus states, referencing a definition created by the United Church of Christ.

The syllabus of the class, called Political Science 201: Research and Analysis, goes on to ask students “to write and speak in a way that does not assume American-ness, maleness, whiteness, heterosexuality, middle-class status, etc. to be the norm.” It is taught by a black, female professor.

In an interview with The College Fix, Jay Howard, dean of Butler’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, denied this practice essentially presumes every student who walks through the door is a racist or misogynist.

He said students must be told not to assume such prejudices because such assumptions are ingrained into the culture and remain there until questioned. With that, a liberal arts education questions these assumptions, and such questions can make for uncomfortable situations, he said.

Being that my old stomping grounds is in Indy, not surprised with Butler. It was a good school at one time but it has gotten so liberal in the last 20 to 30 years. One interesting thing was a few years before I packed and moved to Colorado back in 1995, there was a talk given by an eco-feminist woman. Kind of funny, a friend and I went there and stood outside the door. She was constantly berating men in general and conservative folks. We made some smart-ass comments and we got basically chased out. My friend made a comment that no man should be sitting in there taking it. Found out later that Butler Security was looking for us LOL. Not long afterward, Butler Security was abolished and came in as a Police Department.

Well I guess when history shows a group cannot compete because they are inferior their only course of action is to brainwash those who have beaten them in the battle of ideas and accomplishments to surrender their identity.

In creation “we all be equal” /sarc/ but we sure as hell are not equal in outcome.

You posted this from the article: “Our language doesn’t make it easy to write in ways that are inclusive,” Howard said. “We don’t have a generic singular, I mean we have he and she. There is no pronoun that is gender-neutral there.”
How about we just start referring to everyone as “it.”

And commented with, “How about we just start referring to everyone as “it.”

Ayn Rand’s “Anthem” already addresses this. In about the 4th paragraph we are introduced to the main character, “Our name is Equality 7-2521..”

Here is a description from Amazon that sends chills up my spine:

“In Anthem, Rand examines a frightening future in which individuals have no name, no independence, and no values. Equality 7-2521 lives in the dark ages of the future where all decisions are made by committee, all people live in collectives, and all traces of individualism have been wiped out. Despite such a restrictive environment, the spark of individual thought and freedom still burns in him—a passion which he has been taught to call sinful. In a purely egalitarian world, Equality 7-2521 dares to stand apart from the herd—to think and choose for himself, to discover electricity, and to love the woman of his choice. Now he has been marked for death for committing the ultimate sin. In a world where the great “we” reign supreme, he has rediscovered the lost and holy word—”I.”

Back in the day (1958-59) I was fortunate to be a student in Professor Jackson’s freshman English class at Tufts University. The title of the course was “What is God and What is Man?” We read and discussed writings by Plato, Socrates, Thomas Paine, John Stuart Mill and St. Thomas Aquinas among others. When one student objected to reading one Protestant author (I forget who) because he was on the Catholic List of non approved writers, he was told that if he didn’t want a Liberal Arts education, then he should have gone to a Catholic University. It was the best course I had in college. I wonder if it is given today.

Probably not.

And all the non-white survivors could live in utopias modeled on their present blueprints of Detroit, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Haiti, etc, with no evil white people around to oppress them (and force them to follow us when we “white flight” it out of areas), no evil white culture to make them feel bad-no more Notre Dames, Beethovens, Rembrandts, etc. No more money wasted on ocean or space exploration. Wouldn’t life be grand. I’m sure glad, as an evil white person, I wouldn’t be here to live it.

You hit the nail,on the head. The “funny” thing is, when the whites are all gone, everywhere will be Detroit at best (built by whites, blacks unable to even maintain existing infrastructure), or Zimbabwe at worst (once the breadbasket of Africa, now a net importer of food). God forbid any other place models itself on the Congo (never-ending warfare, cannibalism, mutilation, child rape, wtch doctors, etc).

I am baffled as to what this instructor wants/expects/imagines. When I was in college, we were taught to use evidence and reason. We assumed that the commitment to evidence and reason was impartial; there is no white, black, male, female, straight, gay, American or foreign spin to it. May the better argument win. Unsupported personal assertions had no place in the discussion, except perhaps as initial openings to invite analysis and debate.

Critically examine all assumptions and evidence ... reason clearly and openly ... look always for universal truths that allow people to break out of merely contingent and subjective understandings ... maybe I’m trapped in a white, male, euro- and hetero-centric frame of reference, but I frankly can’t think of anything in my mode of speaking or writing that should pose a problem. If the prof disagrees with me, fine — make a better argument and I’ll reconsider.

Most of my college instructors were left liberal, and some quite radical. But I found all of them to be scrupulously fair in the classroom and in grading. I had some of my best student-teacher relationships with a couple of the lefties, because we enjoyed the clash of ideas (and I was perhaps enough of a challenge to keep them on their toes). That was a long time ago. Maybe college has changed.

You can trace this insanity back over fifty years, at least. Consider the writing of the despicable Gordon Allport, from Harvard, in the middle of the 20th Century:

Myths & Myth Makers In American Higher Education.

We need to stop coddling those who are bent on destroying our heritage. Enough is enough!

Always ask a black racist who says these types of liberal thins, “So, we can now get rid of BET, NAACP, UNCF, etc., right? I mean, since color is no longer an issue we should expect blacks to not use it.”

No surprise that 96% of all Ivy League profs are 0moslem voters (article today about that). How many rational, conservative parents send their wet behind the ears children to leftist pits of depravity and communism aka "universities" and then see a changeling after a couple of years?
