No one reported shot, stabbed or slashed in New York City on Monday, police sources say

Neither Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne nor other officials could remember the last time a day ended with three zeros. It likely didn't happen in 1990, when the city logged a record 2,245 murders, said Tom Reppetto, a NYPD historian and author of 'American Police, 1945-2012.'

By Rocco Parascandola / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Published: Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 2:00 AM Updated: Wednesday, November 28, 2012, 2:00 AM

The lack of gun and knife violence on Monday may be rare, but not a complete surprise, given that the city is on pace to finish the year with just over 400 murders, NYPD historian says.

No news really is good news -- not a single person was reported shot, stabbed or slashed in New York City on Monday, police sources said.

The shutout seemingly caught the NYPD by suprise, as officials were almost at a loss to explain it.

"Nice way to start the week," said Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the NYPD's top spokesman.

Neither Browne nor other officials could remember the last time a day ended with three zeros.

It likely didn't happen in 1990, when the city logged a record 2,245 murders, said Tom Reppetto, a NYPD historian and author of "American Police, 1945-2012."

"There were shootings galore,'' Reppetto said. "We lived in a town where people were afraid to come out of their houses, where babies slept in bathtubs to avoid getting shot, where nursery schools ran drills - 'When you hear the shots, drop down.'"

Reppetto said that the lack of gun and knife violence on Monday may be rare, but not a complete surprise, given that the city is on pace to finish the year with just over 400 murders.

The fact that this made the news is chilling in itself. A whole day without a violent crime? Unbelievable.

Brings to mind an old Anne Murray tune “A Little Good News”.

I rolled out this morning...kids had the morning news show on
Bryant Gumbel was talking about the fighting in Lebanon
Some senator was squawking about the bad economy
It’s gonna get worse you see we need a change in policy

There’s a local paper rolled up in a rubber band
One more sad story’s one more than I can stand
Just once, how I’d like to see the headline say
Not much to print today can’t find nothing bad to say

Because...

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD’d, nobody burned a single building down
Nobody fired a shot in anger...nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

I’ll come home this evening...I’ll bet that the news will be the same
Somebody takes a hostage...somebody steals a plane
How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air...how everybody learned to care

Whoa, tell me...

Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today
And in the streets of Ireland all the children had to do was play
And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD’d, nobody burned a single building down
Nobody fired a shot in anger...nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

Not to worry NYC. Chicago picked up the slack.
15-year-old girl shot to death during sleepover Chicago Sun-Times

"Porshe Foster was with her best friend for a sleepover Monday night on the Southwest Side when the two teens went outside to talk to some boys, her mother said. ... They were standing talking to the guys, and then from what I know, a car came past and [someone inside] just started shooting,” said Porshe’s mother, Bonita Foster. ... Porshe, 15, was rushed to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Her mother rushed there, too, after getting a frantic call from Porshe’s best friend. ... “She wasn’t alive,” said Bonita Foster, her voice cracking. “She didn’t make it.”
This happened in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood (in the 7000 block of South Campbell Ave). Once not that long ago, one of the SAFEST, crime free areas of Chicago. And was part of my old stomping grounds (you didn't have to worry about hanging out, going to different areas of Chicago if you didn't live in that neighborhood. We'd roam the whole SW Side (Parks, Taverns & Bowling Alleys) without any problems.)
