What's driving gun sales spike? Federal law, women and zombies

What's driving gun sales spike? Federal law, women and zombies.

BELLEVUE – Karen Manley stood strong in the range Tuesday afternoon, her right hand firmly gripping a handgun.

“There had been a rash of home invasions,” said Manley, of Brier. “If anything happens, I could defend myself, my kids, and my home.’

Women are just one factor behind a recent spree of gun sales, locally, and across the nation, according to gun lobbyists.

The FBI reported Tuesday that it received 154,873 buyer background check requests on Black Friday, up roughly 20 percent over the same day last year. The requests were so heavy, FBI call centers suffered two outages trying to keep up with demand.

“We were probably 30-35% ahead of what we expected (on Friday),” said Wade Gaughran of Wade’s Eastside Guns in Bellevue, who acknowledges sales have doubled since Election Day, and concerns over changes in the federal gun policy are prompting the spike. “I think (Obama’s) going to try and make something happen this time.”

“There is a concern in the United States about what is going to happen with firearms laws under the second Obama administration,” said Dave Workman, of the Second Amendment Foundation, who also cites economic conditions as a driver.

Workman also says a zombie fad is helping push sales too.

“There is quite a following on this zombie target shooting - the idea of shooting targets that look like weird strange zombie people instead of human silhouette targets or junk targets appeal to a lot of people,” said Workman.

But the President of Washington Ceasefire is not laughing about that explanation.

“It’s the usual paranoia, that Obama is the Boogeyman,” said Ralph Fascitelli, Board President of Washington Ceasefire. “Guns rights groups want to increase anxiety, membership. It’s all about money.”

Consider a Ruger GP-100 revolver in .327 Federal Magnum. 7 shots and more reliable than a semi-auto (for the inexperienced shooter, anyway).

I bought one (Sig P250)a couple of weeks ago, also at Academy, along with a Beretta Neos and another Remington 870. The Sig is my new carry gun. It has a very good feel and I ate up the bullseye at 7 yards. I’m thinking about getting the .40 conversion for it because that’s the only common caliber I don’t have one of. I bought the P250 originally because I didn’t have a 9mm and there may come a day when that’s all the ammmunition that’s available.

Snicker. Why that’s not paranoia; that’s the TRUTH. I keep hearing that Hussein is the best gun salesman in the country. He’s sold me on the need for a couple more guns in my home.

Indeed, there's a particularly popular zombie target which appears to be a green-tinted black guy with big ol' ears.

I can see why those might be selling very well (Red Jacket Firearms is sold out of that one).

Carried a 950 Jetfire (.25) in the 80s, upgraded to a Model 21 in the 90s. Love that little jewel.

I taught both of my children to shot with with the 950, no mag, tip the barrel, load 1 round, close barrel, BRASS.

Great little piece, use high velocity round nose rounds to insure reliable cycling.

It amuses me a little that anyone with Washington Cease Fire should call concern over gun control efforts "paranoia" when he is pursuing them to the very limit of his ability. Nevertheless, despite its well-deserved liberal reputation, even King County is not altogether receptive to gun grabber blatherings. Anyone in doubt can Google an initiative named I-676 and what happened to it when the despised common people were actually allowed to vote on it.

I've shot at Wade's, incidentally, was a member for years, and it's an awesome range.

There is, no doubt, an element of apprehension behind the spike in gun sales, and it's thoroughly justified. Nevertheless, an even stronger element is the simple truth that people like guns, and you will seldom hear this simple truth in the popular media. Gun sales are spiking because people like guns, and not out of mental pathology. Not out of fear, paranoia, hatred, aggression, compensation for some perceived inadequacy, but because they're empowering and a lot of fun.

I had one of those little Beretta’s too. Mine was the Minx in .22 short. I was amazed how accurate it was but you had to really concentrate. If you did it would group about as well as any auto or revolver.

Mine was reliable but not quite 100% so. Maybe every 100 rounds or so, I would get a failure to chamber. I think the short cartridges with a rim was what made it more difficult to make it 100% reliable. I suspect the .25ACP would have been totally reliable as it was designed to work in small autos.

“Gun sales are spiking because people like guns, and not out of mental pathology.”

Here behind enemy lines in the northeast I’d suspect that some gun sales are related to the fact that we’ve laid off thousands of cops (the teachers just have a stronger union); we’re left with smaller, middle-aged police forces that are smart enough to know that it is a de facto crime to enforce laws where minorities are perps, so they “de-police” (file traffic accident reports instead of enforcing the law).
