New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Northeastern lawmakers are seeking $80 billion from Congress to pay for damage caused by Superstorm Sandy — a demand that could wreak havoc on negotiations for a deal on the deficit.

Bloomberg (I) traveled to the Capitol on Wednesday to press lawmakers to approve the $80 billion supplemental appropriations bill — without offsets and with new levels of flexibility — to aid the recovery of New York and New Jersey.

Senators from the two states are also urging the White House to seek a sweeping aid package next week when it asks Congress to prepare the bill to cover storm costs.

The $80 billion amount is more than all the money that would be saved by ending the Bush-era tax rates for top earners next year. The fight over those rates has proven the major sticking point in talks to avert the "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts.

Bloomberg made his request to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who in the past has sought spending cuts to offset disaster aid.

The mayor said that Cantor “understands New York” and its needs but that the GOP leader gave him no commitment that the emergency spending bill would not need to be offset.

Bloomberg said Cantor told him he must consult with his Republican colleagues and examine the disaster aid request before making commitments.

A GOP aide said that Cantor stressed during the meeting that the August debt

I smell a bailout for Northeastern States.

Gotta rebuild those beach houses and Roller Coasters, ya' know! Why should the owners have to pay for them?

Of course, those rednecks in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia got very little attention, or help after being decimated by tornados...!

They can have the money only if no houses are allowed on islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Why rebuild on barrier islands when another storm can wipe everything out again any time in the future?

I have homeowners insurance that may kick in after a storm, but not a hurricane. But I live in TN.

The $80 billion will happen.

Obama is peeing his pants in anticipation of providing work for his union buddies, for many years to come.

Kansas checking in. Was there more bad weather on the coast?

Spend your own money to rebuild.

Those union fat cats that wouldn’t let help come help you should have some deep pockets.

They need to get a couple tugs to drag that mess to deeper water. It would make a good fishing reef.

That is the extent of any help I would give them. Let them eat Bloomie and Christie Creame, that lard ass could feed the Jersey shore for a couple months.

Because NJ gives your redneck states $.43 of every fed tax dollar we pay (meaning i was personally forced to pay you guys $8,000 last year) we fought the revolution for you guys (i live a mile away from a battle site)and drafted that constitution you guys claim to defend, which formed a union that you are part of. Next time a hurricane tornado or hog infestation wreaks devastation in one of your backward states please don't accept any of my money in assistance. Until them STFU. BTW its this sort of stupidity that caused Romney to lose the election you morons. The biggest mistake the North made in the Civil War was not making the South a fiefdom.

I don’t mind giving to the area, what I can, friends and family and solid organizations who will most likely give 100% to victims, of which there are many.

But there is a declaration, further than what we know, known locally on the jersey shore that no out of state workers are going to be allowed in.

In that case, if it’s true, it seems that outside of state tax money should not go in either.

I know a guy on the Shore who ahd flood insurance and has five adult sons plus connections for workers to help rebuild. This is the kind of guy who willl help neighbors as he has resources. Got dragged to FEMA by everyone around him. His Lib family AND FEMA whom his town is pushing onto everyone. It’s a culture shift. I wonder how nuch their dictatorial “charismatic” undisciplined obese governor is pushing all of this in order to push dependency. Ugh. Just saying what the pressure is up there.

I think your argument lays with DC, not with the “redneck states”.

Frankly, I am always positive about places like NJ, NYC and Ca. If it were not for the likes of them, they would be living here.

Ahem. YOU personally fought the Revolution and drafted the Constitution ??? Methinks not. And you haven’t been able to buy a house in a zone that can flood, without being offered Federally-subsidized Flood Insurance.

What, you didn’t buy any ?? Too bad, so sad, but it’s not the job of the rest of us to bail you out from your own stupidity. . .

And I’d watch it, talking smack about your Southron brethren. WE provide most of the soldiers, that your pansified “Jersey Shore” guidos won’t “lower themselves” to sign up. . .
