Senate panel approves bill requiring police to get a warrant to read emails

A key Senate panel approved legislation Thursday that would require police to obtain a search warrant from a judge before they can read a private citizen's emails, Facebook messages or other electronic communications.

The revised Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee will now move on to the full Senate for a vote. Passage would be a victory for privacy advocates, who say current privacy rules have been left in the dust by technological progress.

Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who played a key role in drafting the original bill, has called the existing law, written 26 years ago, "anachronistic."

Leahy said that Americans "face even greater threats to their digital privacy, as we witness the explosion of new technologies and the expansion of the government's surveillance powers."

Some good news, even for Leahy. An article by Judge Napolitano from yesterday.

Whatever happened to the right to be left alone?

Well this is a first, an issue that Leahy and I agree on.

The last I heard the original version of the bill had been modified at the urging of the justice dept. The new version gave us even fewer protections then we had currently. No warrant required.

Wonder which version they are talking about here.

Its only good news if it only applies to “federal police”.

State & Local police are legitimately bound only by their own respective Constitutions & laws.

In Judge Napolitano’s article I linked from yesterday he mentioned both versions and this article points out it’s the version that requires search warrants from a judge for access.

Leahy is not a trustworthy person ~ his crowning achievement in his own words was when he firt got elected to the Senate he voted to cut off funds to Lon Nol's army in Cambodia and that led directly to the holocaust.

If he's for it, Christians must be against it. Americans must be against it. Human beings must oppose it with all their might.

I couldn't agree with you more but it looks like he may have finally gotten something right.

Highly unlikely. This is the guy who created the very image of the modern acolyte of the antichrist. It simply isn’t possible for him to ever be right ~ if it happened his head would explode.

YES...a big problem the GOP has...especially when a far-left Dem proposes a bill limiting government intrusion

The GOP needs to get back to real conservative values...dump the Business Socialism and Free Trade Communist Globalism....it would mean less big government socialism for us...and election victories for the GOP

But...hey lets continue pandering to the Communist Chinese and Illegal Aliens...while stripping away the rights of US citizens....and we wonder why Obama gets re-elected?

You want E-mail privacy you are going to have to encrypt your messages it is that simple.

It’s freely available & if grammer school kids can do it you can to.
Research Pretty Good Privacy/PGP or Gnu Privacy Guard/GPG & make your choice as to which one you like & use it for secure mail regardless of what the corrupt bastards in Washington D.C. decide to do.

Thanks, I believe you're right and don't send anything by email I consider private but encrypting could make things easier.
