(Reuters) - Al Qaeda fighters are still trying to make inroads into Afghanistan, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Thursday, cautioning that battling the group would be a core U.S. mission there for years to come.
Panetta made the comments as the United States weighs how large a military force to keep in Afghanistan when the NATO combat mission ends in 2014, ending a war that, at that point, will have stretched for over 13 years.
There are approximately 66,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, but the residual force may number less than 10,000. President Barack Obama could decide in the coming weeks, although no deadline has been set.

Afghanistan can only be saved if it is made a Muzzie Free Zone.
What a waste.
My nephew gets sent over to Afghan for 3-4-5 months every spring it seems. Last year, he told me we would be in Afghan for 50 years, just not as much Reg Army, more spec forces. He said the USA was paving & building infrastructure between major centers they plan to hold. He also said there were as many civilian workers as military in country; hard to believe.
Americans may be in Afghanistan past 2014, but their ROE will not allow them to defend themselves and they will be targets in a shooting gallery. Sounds like winning strategy to me.
The Democrat Senate voted to get out of Afghanistan quicker. Go for it. They did it to try and make an issue with the House who voted to keep troops there longer. The Senate vote was non-binding so they did it just to make it an issue. Make it one. The Democrats want to fight with the President, let them.
one of Romney’s biggest errors was not calling for an immediate withdrawal and pinning the defeat on Obama.
I really think that would have made a difference if he was serious about it and realy went after Obama on the issue.
Americans are growing tired of war in the mideast and simply stating it would have gone a long way.
